Rebuilding Firefox Profiles. Interest?

I just helped a friend rebuild a Firefox profile after they crufted it up pretty good. (installing and uninstalling lots of extensions can do that) I was wondering if there were interest in having a how-to on fixing FF profiles and, possibly, a rebuilder that would save out your cookies, passwords, bookmarks, etc, and rebuild the rest of the profile (sans extensions). Whaddya think?

Using Nightlies

Submitted by chadsmith on August 5, 2006 - 12:25pm

Before switching to portable apps I used to let Bon Echo and Thunderbird download the nightlies so I could try and report bugs on them.

Are there settings in Firefox Portable or Thunderbird Portable I may have missed that would allow this to continue?

[Firefox CRASH] Shochwave Flash plugin illegal operation crashes Firefox

Submitted by ttohu on August 5, 2006 - 3:37am

Ever since Shockwave Flash did some upgrade on my Internet Explorer (yes it HAS to be on my machine), I cannot use my Firefox, as after viewing some pages with Flash, it crashes and closes.

VERY annoying.
Tried to uninstall Shockwave from the computer, did not help
Tried to install new 10.1 shockwave, did not help
Tried to use fresh, clean install of firefox portable, did not help
Tried to download shockwave plugin for the new Firefox, failed to install it.

Can you suggest any help????

How to Have PFF (and PTB) Appear on the U3 Launchpad?

Submitted by Bulldog on August 3, 2006 - 4:36pm

I ditched the 'for U3' version of PFF (and PTB) in favor of 'plain old' PFF and PTB...and I'm happy with the results.

Is there a way to make these apps appear on the U3 launchpad? For example, would adding this line to the XML file do the trick?

[illegal symbol]APPLICATION guid="FirefoxPortable" launchOnStart="N" lastUsed="2/27/2006 11:01:21">\Firefox_Portable_1.5.0.6_en-us.exe[illegal symbol]/APPLICATION

(Where "illegal symbol" refers to the sideways "v" that is not allowed in these forums.)

Thanks for your help.

Shutterfly.com plug-in crashes Portable Firefox, but not Firefox itself?

Submitted by Tim Chesnutt on August 3, 2006 - 2:59pm

I signed up for Shutterfly's photo service - I have friends that rave about the service, and it all seems good so far. The problem is that Shutterfly's plug-in for mass uploading of pictures crashes my Firefox Portable. They specifically work with Firefox and have had no similar problems there.

My question:

With all the users of Firefox Portable, is anyone else successfully using Shutterfly? [ie: is it a problem specific to my computer?]

Is there a way I get someone else to try Shutterfly and see if they can duplicate this error?

If it is a real problem and not just me, does anyone have advice I can pass on to Shutterly's tech people so they can modify their plug in to also work with Firefox Portable?

PFF and U3 PFF

Submitted by Bulldog on August 3, 2006 - 11:01am

Maybe these questions have been asked before, but not recently, at least not in the most recent 15 pages of Forum posts Wink

I currently run your PFF for U3 and NoBrainz (sorry) TB for U3 on my Kingston U3 USB drive. Both work fine, but I would like to try the 'straight' PFF and PTB (i.e., instead of "for U3" versions.)

1. Should I uninstall PFF for U3 and xBrainz TB for U3 before installing PFF and PTB?

2. Will the fact that these are not "for U3" versions cause any problems, either for U3 or PFF/PTB?

3. Anything special I need to know about installing PFF and PTB on a U3 USB drive?

how "portable" is "portable"?

Submitted by StreetMedic on August 2, 2006 - 9:03pm

I was just wondering if anyone had any experience moving an existing Portable Firefox installation folder from one USB device to another. I tried to copy an image of one USB drive to another, larger one. All of my other portable apps are completely happy on their new home drive (as I expected they would be), but Firefox is not.

When launched from the original thumb drive, everything is still OK. But on the new drive the migrated installation is "broken", even after repeated attempts and methodologies to copy it. The program seems to launch/run just fine, which is nice. But, none of the extensions are seen and the toolbars/buttons/options aren't set up like they are on the original drive.
