have my own collection of portable apps, need a way of getting updates using FTP or something cloud - ideas?

Submitted by xbibleyosef on May 8, 2014 - 9:39am

Hi,

my product has Christian software for people in countries where spreading the gospel might be illegal or dangerous.

I have lists of streaming radio stations, sometimes the IPs of these change or stop working.

I wrote a script to get updates using FTP using DOS but its clunky and difficult to manage. One of the free FTP accounts got terminated for being not used enough, (seems couple of times a month wasnt enough!)

URGENT: checkboxes per category in download manager

Submitted by pauserSTOPSTEAL... on May 8, 2014 - 6:02am

please, pLEAse, ( swear words come to mind )

please do this 5 second coding job!
put a check box beside each category to check all of that category.

( i'd ask for a ctrl range selection like in win explorer too but far out. at least do the above one.

have you tried to check all boxes beside games?
you still need to manually uncheck 50 something boxes.

thanks for your time.

Liliputing: Unhappy with Chrome and Firefox? Here are some alternate web browsers

Submitted by trust on May 6, 2014 - 6:30pm

(To better continue from here: https://portableapps.com/node/39306)

Link to article:

Mission: I'd really like to have the option to run quite a few browsers or profiles at the same time.

I keep Chrome only as a secondary browser because it comes with Flash. I uninstalled the universal Flash plugin from my system and what it to keep it that way.

Question: what might be some interesting browsers for you from the above article (or in general) or for me to do the trick?

Pale Moon? Check

automatically running batch file as administrator

hello there,

I'm rolling together my own Portable Apps distro aimed at people interested in Christianity who live in a country where that might be illegal. My product is encrypted, so the purpose of the device is ambiguous without the password.

I discovered running a browser on a USB drive really sucks as the disk performance for shuffling temp file is poor. So I hit on an idea, I managed to make a RAM disk to run a portable version of Chrome on.

When clicking on the menu to run the batch file script, it won't work as it need Administration rights.

The batch file does this:-

Portable App which does not need to write to registry

Submitted by spakkaps on May 3, 2014 - 2:13am

Hi all,

Im sure this has been covered but could not find it in the discussions.

I have a new job which I would like to do modications to images such as cropping, etc as part of my sumbission briefs, At home I use Photoshop but they dont have this at work.

I would like to use Freeware Gimp or a portable version of Photoshop which I have, but the problem comes in with the work computer.

As a Domain user I have no rights to write to the registry, and therefore no portable apps I have tried will run on the work PC.

Does anyone know of a workaround for this

PortableApps + Dropbox

Submitted by Suskis on April 28, 2014 - 5:14am

I have 3 different computers and I have been using Dropbox for years to keep synched all my documents. Lately I have installed my Portable apps inside Dropbox too, so that I do not need an USB drive to have an identical system on all 3 computers.
I would love to use Dropbox portable to mirror this solution even to an USB drive, but there is not an offical Dropbox portable application.
I see there is an unofficial version of it: does anyone recommend it?
I guess Carbide would be the only option to safely carry my Dropbox on usb around?

Always start an app as admin

Submitted by thany on April 25, 2014 - 4:24am

How can I make an app (one that's installed by a PA.com installer) always start as admin?

Some apps do need it, but don't request admin rights automatically, so they can be used in readonly mode. I want full access, always. Therefore, I'm looking for some sort of "AlwaysAdmin" or "AlwaysElevate" kind of flag, somewhere...

How do to this?
