Thoughts on Nagware? Should we allow it?

We've recently run into the question of whether we should allow nagware here at PortableApps.com. Nagware are apps that are free but will nag you about registering or purchasing the full version at every launch. We're not talking about a single entry in a menu with a link to the professional version, but a nag that you have to dismiss over and over.

How Does Cloud Drive Implementation Work

Submitted by cristco on October 18, 2012 - 4:24pm

I use Thunderbird, and my contacts and calendar sync to a Google GMail account. But GMail can't access external addresses via IMAP, only POP. I can use web2mail.com to get email but the interface sucks and I can't see my contacts or calendar.

Ideally I want a browser-based version of Thunderbird that accesses contacts and calendar from Google (which is synced from my desktop). Not sure if that is possible.

When I'm away from my desktop and have to access my e-mail, it may be on a public computer and I may not remember to carry a flash drive around with me everywhere.

Do I need Windows admin permissions to install Portableapps?

Submitted by snegovichok on October 18, 2012 - 3:19pm

Hello all,

I intended to use portableapps to run skype from PC with no admin rights. But it looks that I need admin just to install the platform itself.

I've put installer "PortableApps.com_Platform_Setup_11.0.1.exe" to the root of flash drive and ran it. And (sure) got message that I have no appropriate permissions.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Well, i've had this issue a few versions ago

actually its a couple of issues

1. I installed the suite in a certain location - then moved it from that location.. and it wouldn't run correctly, it kept creating folders in the old location

2. I had previously installed portable apps (with edited install dirs) - when I added them to the portable apps folder they were detected in the menu, but no updates were found for them

and lastly its more of a request. please remove those folders documents music picture lalala, or give me an option to do it. I keep deleting them

Grid Analysis and Display System (GrADS)

Submitted by zemega on October 12, 2012 - 3:38am

Hi, I would like to request an portable version of the application Grid Analysis and Display System (GrADS). While the program is small, the data it handles ranges from 20MB to 3 TB (the size my research center is handling normally). But before requesting this, I have a question, would it be alright to run this program as a portable app? Given the amount of data it handles, yes, I would be working with 3TB data soon, would it wear out the life of the usb drive? Does each of the program calculation would need acessing the pendrive?

Submitted by trentg on October 11, 2012 - 2:21pm

Hello,

Monster 2 [portable app link] has been pretty popular here, so I thought I'd post this.

Monster 2 has a paid version called Monster RPG 2 with tonnes of upgrades to it. Well, I'm trying to make Monster RPG 2 free and open source and I need your help. If it happens, it could easily be made into a portable app for this site.

A new cloud feature !!!

I have multiple flash drives And computer. I want my Apps to sync to my other computers (windows) so I don't have to sync them individually. Can you make it sync to the back up files.

Can you also make a automatic back up sync that you can sync by it self while running in the backgroud. Thanks Smile Wink
