UPDATE (2011-06-02): The switchover to our content delivery network is complete. Now, all images are loading from a worldwide network of servers for faster loading. The site is now measurably faster for both logged-in and anonymous users and better able to handle the large spikes in traffic we get after major releases. Thanks for bearing with us while we made the transition and enjoy the new speed! - John

Wireshark Portable?

Submitted by Manly1138 on May 25, 2011 - 2:55pm

Maybe this has already been covered but I just went to Wireshark's web page and downloaded their Portable Apps version. It comes in Portable Apps format. Even the file name is WiresharkPortable-1.4.6.paf.exe.

I noticed that Wireshark portable does not exist under applications on this site. Wonder what the disconnect is or if I'm missing something.

Is it because of the Pcap install?

Get new apps - how to tell what's new

Submitted by pmoore on May 24, 2011 - 4:51am

One thing I haven't found in the platform is a (non-manual) way of checking what new apps exist. I have a USB drive with all the apps installed on it, and I use the updater to keep them up to date. But when I want to check if any brand new apps have come out, I can go to "get more apps" but that just takes me to the site. The trouble is that the site doesn't really offer me a way to just see what's new (as opposed to new or updated).

Ideally, something like "check for updates" but looking for apps on the site that I don't have installed, would be perfect.

PortableApps icon is displayed in the task bar

Submitted by genesis on May 22, 2011 - 10:55pm

I always start with an empty flash drive when installing PortableApps. Some (not all) flash drives I use with PortableApps display the PortableApps icon in the task bar next to the normal Windows start button. If I close that icon, the normal PortableApps icon in the system tray also goes away. I don't want the PortableApps icon to show up on the task bar. I only want it to show up in the system tray. Can any of you help me with this.

Thanks,

Don

Running portable apps with wine

Submitted by afdaddd .-_ on May 18, 2011 - 11:23am

I have Firefox Portable installed on a flash drive to keep my bookmarks and settings with me between public computers. Sometimes I wish to run it from my home computer that has Linux to retrieve saved bookmarks and such. Now I know there are ways to save bookmarks outside Firefox, but that's not what I'm looking for.
I had no problems running Firefox Portable 3.6.3 or even 4.0b8 under wine, but since I've updated to Firefox Portable 4.0.1 (and updated wine a couple times since I ran FFx Portable last), I can't do this any more. Wine gives the output:
