Portable App performance

Submitted by techdesk on April 15, 2009 - 4:46pm

I have setup the "PortableApps" suite if you will on my USB flash drive.
I am thrilled with being able to do this so I can have the many apps I use no matter what PC I am on with my own settings.

What I find however, is that some of the apps while they work well, run slower from my flash drive.

One example of this is Firefox. It works great, never really have a problem, but of course does not perform as well.

GPL prog + free proprietary module

Ok, so whenever I see the question come up about combining GPL and proprietary software, it's almost always the proprietary dev asking can I use GPL code. My question is, can a GPL'ed program require a (free) proprietary module to work, by not distributing that module and just telling the user to go get it (provided the user can legally obtain this module, and in this case, for free)? My guess is yes, as in say the LAME plugin for Audacity. Just want to clear this up.

Shortcuts Script

Submitted by shawymonkey on April 14, 2009 - 9:34pm

I was playing around and I thought of a simple problem that I had, and it was that whenever my flash drive is not in my computer there are still the firefox icons that are associated with firefox portable. If I were to hit refresh on my desktop I would see an ugly icon and that bothered me a little. I created a little python script that I thought might be helpful to people. It tries to detect firefox portable and adds the shortcut in the quick launch and the desktop, but if it cannot find it, it will delete the shortcuts on the desktop and quick launch.

Files Read-Only

Hi All,

I'm having problems with my father's USB stick. I carried out a few updates for him yesterday, bringing everything up to date (App's Suite menu, Firefox, Thunderbird & Open Office). I then started Firefox to check his add-ons and update them when I hit a problem.

Foxmarks is refusing to update to Xmarks for me, and I've discovered that all the files and folders on the stick are marked "Read-Only". I've tried going to properties and unchecking the flag but it's just being ignored.

Can anyone give me some pointers. Thanks.

portableapps + XAMPP + tomcat = production application

Submitted by ghoz on April 10, 2009 - 9:04pm

Hi, I've got a web application using tomcat and mysql. I'm considering using portableapps to distribute the application to stand-a-lone users who
can run the application locally on their computers using a usb memory stick.
I've done some tests and it seems like working well with tomcat add-on and java set up.

I was wondering whether anyone has done something similar before and if someone can point me to examples of similar 'production' applications.
most appreciated,

GHOZ

Development Test Page

I don't know if this is possible, but it would be nice if there was a way to sort by columns. That way the apps could be listed alphabetically, by category, author, or release date. Hopefully it's something minor that wouldn't be a problem to implement. If it is a hassle, don't worry about it.
