Unable to run on Windows 7

Submitted by jruggiero on March 16, 2012 - 8:04am

Hello! My work computer now has Windows 7 without any admin rights. This machine is pretty locked down. I thought a workaround would be portableapps, however it will not allow me to run the portableapps app fom my thumbdrive. I configured it on my other machine, but still this work machine won't let me run it.

Any advice on a workaround for this ridiculous Windows 7 machine?

Thanks!

Jennifer

Had enough of portable apps

Submitted by reem_151 on March 16, 2012 - 7:18am

A few weeks ago I was raving about portable apps and how handy the platform launches apps and I can have my settings and bookmarks in Firefox. But recently there has been a lot of updates on a number of apps and now everything has been going t*ts up. Firefox keeps reporting that flash, shockwave, silverlight is out of date. I update and it reports that all is fine. The next time I use it, it reports that it still out of date. Now I can not update cos when I try it asks me to close firefox, I close it but it still thinks it is open. I tried moving the files manually, but still no.

Portable? Then why do I have to run an exe?

Submitted by pabrams on March 15, 2012 - 11:56am

So I go download portable nethack, because I don't want to install an app.

To my surprise, the downloaded file is an exe.

In my books, a portable app does not require installation. So what's up with the executable? I expected a zip that I could extract to a folder, and I expected to see NethackW.exe inside that zip, so I could simply run it.

PA version verify

Submitted by morphingstar2 on March 13, 2012 - 11:28pm

I had an old version of PA. Working. Downloaded new version 10. Installed.
I have no clue whether the new replaced the old or whether 2 can run at same time.

I have 2 PA windows open, HELP says version 1.6 for both. Is PA built to run in stereo mode? Where then is "10" ?

Also the AppProgram menu is higher than the available screen space. (Only 1 line in the Win7 Taskbar. The lowest part is unreadable. )

For some apps (uTorrent, Magnifier, Iron for example) I have to quit manually.

I explain: when I restart the system, I have to exit manually these programs in order for the next boot they start properly. Can you fix it that I don't have to quit them manually at restart and they can start the next time I boot up? I hope you can understand the situation.

Submitted by farat_as on March 13, 2012 - 9:21am

Hello!

I have Winamp install on my system. I download the Winamp portable from here: https://portableapps.com/node/24503 . I open the portable Winamp and i close it. After that I open normal Winamp which was installed already on my system and it opened like first time. I mean it ask questions the same when I had open it first time on my system.

I try it 3 times. I always face the same problem.

The portable apps of this site changes the settings of default installed applications?

Thank you!
