Suggestions/Questions

Submitted by Cryp71c on August 11, 2011 - 1:12pm

I would like to start by saying great job to the PortableApps.com team for the great job done on the pre-releases. I have followed this portable platform for a few years now and it's awesome to see the developments made. Now for the questions/suggestions:

PA next. Possible to change/remove the shortcut?

Submitted by mgagnonlv on August 10, 2011 - 9:19pm

Hello,

I know you can't please everyone, but I am amongst those that really liked the windows-alt-space shortcut that existed in PR-5 (?). Ctl-alt-space really interferes with the french hard space which is found at altgr-space on my keyboard (French-canadian ISO).

Is it possible to either:
– make sure that it's truly only ctl-alt-space (i.e. the left keys only) serve for the shortcut...
– have a customizable shortcut...
– or more simply an option to remove the shortcut through a switch in the ini file ?

Updater - change directory where updates are downloaded to?

Submitted by ejplat on August 10, 2011 - 7:31am

Hi,

First, thanks to you all who made portableapps.com such a wonderful piece of software!

I've been eagerly waiting for the 2.x platform in order to keep my apps up2date automatically. However things don't work as expected in my environment:

We've got a rather stringent policy in place that restrict .exe-files of being executed only from certain locations. Googling my way around I found that the auto-updater ("check for updates") in the portableapps suite seems to download the updates so some subdir of %TEMP% then trying to install it from there.

Feature request: pop-up tool tip

Submitted by provadance on August 4, 2011 - 8:35am

I have a lot of apps installed in the Platform, and love it. Problem is, that for apps I use rarely, I can't always remember from the cryptic names what they do. It would be helpful to have a pop-up tooltip describing the applications functions briefly when I hover over the app name. Preferably it would be customizable also. Thanks.

PA2.2.1: Windows7TaskbarIcon=false doesn't work

Submitted by klatham on August 3, 2011 - 9:39pm

PA 2.2.1: I'm trying to hide the task bar icon as desribed in the doco. It doesn't seem to work.

In this case, I am running PA from the HDD not a USB message stick. (C:\PortableApps) on Windows 7 Pro 64bit.

I have a shortcut to C:\PortableApps\start.exe 'pinned' to the task bar. When I run it, I end up with 2 PA Icons in the task bar (the pinned shortcut and the running program icon) and another in the tray.

Other than that, I can't find fault with the new platform. Looks great!

Lots of apps won't run in 64 bit Win7 - Solved

Submitted by diab0lik on August 3, 2011 - 2:44am

I've been using portable apps on a USB drive for years. Only recently did I find out about portableapps as a wrapper.

I really liked the simplicity it offers, and I don't have to navigate through folders, etc. etc.

Only problem I'm having, is that a LOT of the apps I downloaded thru portableapps refuse to run in a 64bit win7 environment.

I have tried running the portableapps exe as well as the individual program exe's run in xp compatibility to no avail.

[Closed] Incorrect ordering on apps update window

Submitted by rzippert on August 2, 2011 - 5:50pm

Just wanted to report that in the "Check for updates" window, when it lists which are available to you, if you try to order the list by size it gets ordered alphabetically, like this:

1 MB
10 MB
15 MB
19 MB
150 MB
2 MB
21 MB
3 MB

I believe it should be ordered by the size itself, shouldn't it? Not very useful the way it is...

Att,
