PortableApps Will Not Run

Submitted by ChazB on November 28, 2006 - 12:00pm

When I installed portable apps on my 512MB iPod Shuffle to see if I'd like it, everything worked perfectly. I went out and bought a generic 4GB USB 2.0 flash drive, and no matter what I try nothing will work. Every exe I try to run generates an error report to Microsoft. My USB drive works fine for everything else (read, write, access files) but nothing I do with PortableApps works.

Any ideas?

A few suggestions

First off, I love the menu. I have used PStart, and I actually like this menu better. Thanks for this very awesome product. I have searched the forum and haven't found any mention of a few things I would like to see in a future release. I realize these could take a while and could already be in development.

1. Addition or removal of folders in the folder list.
a. custom icon for folders

2. Resizable menu.

3. Custom display/ workspace options. (Maybe you can design this to be an add-on to the base install?)
a. background or wallpaper image
b. menu color
c. menu layout (where items are on the menu, minimalist layout)

I've been a portable apps user for a long time, I just got the new system on my USB memory.

I just wanted to say what a great job you've done on it. It's Perfect.

Portable Suite - Suggestion

Submitted by TheVoyager on November 27, 2006 - 4:21pm

Would it be possible to be able to rename the Apps in the menu, I notice it uses the name that is in the 'Product Name' but this can be confusing for some Apps.

I have an Installer for Network Magic which shows up as 'Installer Application' in the menu which is meaningless, and it would be nice to be able to rename the Menu item.

Uninstalling PortableApps Suite

There are plenty of instructions how to get PortableApps Suite onto your USB device and a nice little installer. But no where on this site can I find how to remove it. An uninstaller would be ideal, but how can I go about removing everything it puts in there? Even a list of files it adds to my device would be nice.

Adding Apps w/Multiple Executables: Winamp

Submitted by Bulldog on November 27, 2006 - 1:58pm

"The PortableApps Menu will also work with other apps. You just need to place their executables (exe files) in a directory "next to" the PortableAppsMenu directory."

Using Winamp as an example: I installed Winamp to the PortableApps directory. The installation created a single directory ('Winamp') inside the PortableApps directory. When I then 'refreshed app icons' there were three icons related to Winamp on the start menu, because the Winamp directory has three executables. I only need one executable...for winamp.exe, which launches the program.

I tried moving the Winamp program directory outside the PortableApps directory, and copying just winamp.exe to a directory inside the PortableApps directory. That put the right icon on the start menu, but Winamp won't start under those circumstances. I also tried placing a shortcut to winamp.exe into a Winamp directory inside the PortableApps directory, but that doesn't place an icon on the start menu.

Autorun.ini

Hey I am probably jumping the gun, but I was wondering if someone could tutor me a little. I know John is working on something like this right now.

I am using PAM now in lieu of PStart and U3.

Nothing against PStart, it is just that John has made the format of the programs and the menu so nice and user friendly.

To my question-
I have already modified my autorun.ini to look like this:
[Autorun]
Open=PortableApps\PortableAppsMenu\PortableAppsMenu.exe
Action=Start PortableAppsMenu
Icon=fficon1.ico
Label=2GB SanDisk Cruzer

This obviously causes Windows XP to recognize the flash drive and ask if you want to launch the PAM, and it sets the icon and name of the drive for Windows Explorer.

Can you change....

how the drive is automaticly renamed to "PortableAapps"? can you change the name to whatever you want it to be? can you change the picture? because I liked how my drive was named before I installed the suite.

PortableAppsMenu Error Message

Submitted by olisoft on November 27, 2006 - 7:08am

When trying to launch PortableApps from my falsh disc i get always two error messages:

1.
Window title: PortableApps Menu: PortableAppsMenu.exe - Application Error
Message: The exception unknown exception (oxoeedfade) occured in the application at location 0x7c59bc81

2.
Window title: Application Error
Message: Exception EOSError in module PortableAppsMenu.exe at 0000DA65.
System Error. Code: 87.
The parameter is incorrect.

I've installed the complete package without modifying anything.
I can launch all the applications without problem directly.

Where can be the problem?
