App. icons not showing in menu

Submitted by SteveW on January 25, 2007 - 12:41pm

Hi,
I just installed PortableApps Standard on a external HD and when I start it, the icons in the app list do not show up. I tried to refresh the icons, reinstalled the app, redownloaded the app and then installed new copy along with the patch. No matter what I do, the icons don't appear. The icons for the folders and options are there but no icons on the left side menu. Is there something I am not doing right?
The HD I am using is a 20gig notebook drive formatted in FAT32.

Thank you in advance.
SteveW

I have some small suggestion! To: John

I have some small suggestion or request,
1: can you put a "Minimum requirement recommends" on the PAM installation page or on each single portable application, because maybe it will be more user-friendly for us to refer, when example: some users pc only have 128RAM or even lower and the application need higher requirements! Thank you.

2: I'm suggesting the new concept of skin function in PAM, can you make it as "come with basic Red Yellow Blue Green White & Black colour skin", that I thing will be more user-friendly for different flavour of users!

Error Message when running program off PortableApps Menu

Submitted by Trekker on January 20, 2007 - 5:05pm

I've been using the PortableApps Menu system on my new flash drive for a while now, and I must say it works wonderfully (much better than the U3 software that came with it). Anyways, I recently installed Civilization 2 onto my flash drive. I had done this on my old drive(s) and it always ran fine on other computers. I put it on my new drive, and it runs fine when I go into the folders and activate the actual .exe file. However, whenever I try to run it off the PortableApps Menu, I get the following error message:

Error "-8" in module "4" data: 0 0

File open failed: MODULES.DB

Volume label change

Submitted by pctyson on January 20, 2007 - 9:56am

Can anyone tell me why the program has changed the volume label on my portable hard drive? I do not like this behavior at all and there does not seem to be any settings under the options menu to prevent this. I really like this program but I dislike this obtrusive behavior enough that I will probably remove it. Since it appears that there is no uninstall application, I guess that I am going to have to manually remove the registry entries. It would be awesome if this application did not use the registry but instead used an .ini file.

Seems that the icon in the bottom right tray only show up when it wants. Is there a way to open the remove bla bla bla(i forget what it is called)window? All I want to do is know that I will not have a problem pulling out my drive.

Thanks Bob

Skinning and UI Suggestions for PortableApps Menu

Background

+ A single png could be used to replace background.jpg and background_top.bmp.
- It would also allow for transparent and semi transparent areas.
- It would keep file size of themes down. ( I'm using a 600k background_top.bmp in the theme I'm working on, to allow for trans at the edges of the ridges) http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r62/jmh77/PortableApps%20Skins/HeavyE...

Margins

+ There should be margin adjustment for menu items.

Quick & Easy Launcher

Since there seems to be fair amount of requests for help on creating launchers.
Here is a quick way to do.
Once PAM 1.1 is released this will not be needed though.
1. Download this batch converter. (Its freeware I found it using google)
http://www.hollmen.dk/files/batcom10uk.zip
2. Copy this to a text file and rename it to {appname}.bat
START ..\{AppName}\App\{foldername}\{exeName}.exe
this is the relative path to your exe from the PAM folder you will place your files and launcher in.
3. Edit the path to fit your path and exe name.

Closing the App

Submitted by thomas175 on January 12, 2007 - 1:32pm

I have sucessfully (I believe) installed PortableApps to my USB flash device. I cannot find a way to close the App after I am done using it and before I Safely Stop the USB. The programs I installed run fine, no problems.

How do I close the PortableApps other than going into Task Manager?

Thomas
