Updating Apps one at a time

Submitted by Thoughts... on April 4, 2023 - 10:59am

As far as I can tell, when updatng apps the platform downloads all the installation packages needed and then runs them. Since I do not update regularly this process can take a long time and fill all available space and fail.
I know you can manually sellect which Apps to update so its possible to manually update them one at a time, however, this is not very convienient and requires some guess work. Yes I could buy a bigger USB stick (not on a USB stick but hey!). Adding more storage just moves the issue into the future and I also run out of space for other reasons.

cant get platform to work - XP tablet edition

Submitted by pontid01 on March 30, 2023 - 6:08am

I dusted off an old Fujitsu slate running xp tablet edition, had platform 2.12 this no longer connects to update and downloding 2.23 and 2.24 they both crash.
Any one have any ideas?
Why when it is so old? Just for fun, Firefox 43 downloaded and installed separately. Smile
if there is no way to update the platform it is no biggie, but I thought I'd see if anyone had any ideas.

excessive disk activity and memory usage with chrome

Submitted by TimBo266 on March 27, 2023 - 2:47pm

Recently since an update to Chrome for your portable app program, my HD activity has become so bad that I think the computer has or is going to crash. The disk activity is 98 to 100% continually. I check this through task manager. I see there are 26 incidences of chrome open and all are busy. The same issue affects the system's memory. It occupies as much as 59% of 16 gig RAM. I think I was getting better numbers with the real chrome with a relocated cache. I think there would only be 2 incidences of Chrome working in the task manager. What is going on here?

Apps on PortableApps website but not in PortableApps Software

Submitted by dgdharet on March 25, 2023 - 1:57am

I have just realized that certain portableapps like Irfanview are available on the website
https://portableapps.com/apps/graphics_pictures/irfanview_portable
But they are not available in the PortableApps Directory via portableapps software --> GetMoreApps

Is this by mistake?

One app with multiple shortcuts

Submitted by heXler on March 17, 2023 - 7:29am

Hi,

is it possible to have multiple shortcuts to one App?

I want to be able to start an App with different command line arguments (in my case I want to start Opera either normally or with a proxy). I know where to configure the command line arguments. But is it possible to tell PortableApps to load two versions of OperaPortable.ini and show them as two shortcuts?

Thanks.

64-bit preferred (only) mode

Due to the current popularity of 64-bit systems, it may not be necessary for most users to be compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit at the same time.
Storing two versions at the same time will waste double the storage space, especially for some large software or stored in the cloud driver with limited space.

Is it possible to consider separating the 32-bit and 64-bit program packages, just like JRE, allowing users to choose what they need to download? Or you can also keep the 32+64 version, providing a total of 3 versions for users to choose from.

Not exactly support, but I have a couple of questions

First off, if this is the wrong board to post this on, please tell me the correct board.
That said,

What's the point of having a .nomedia file inside the PortableApps folder? .nomedia files do nothing on any OS except Android, and the platform doesn't have an Android version.

Also, what's the point of the Documents folder that gets created upon installation?
