Is there any reason why the windows version of emacs couldn't be a portable app? I use emacs every day of my life, though i'm often working on other peoples machines. Now most of the time, with windows, a great text editor isn't as ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY as is is under *nix, but i'd love to have the option to use emacs whenever, wherever.
Also, can portable apps b made to work with *nix? If not, why not? I'd love to carry my emacs around with me. I've been tweaking my emacs with .el files and .emacs for almost two years now. its like a warm fuzzy blanket. It would SERIOUSLY be useful to me to be able to have this funcionality on the go . . .
What a great website !!!! Have only been on here a short time but its going to become a favourite I can see.
I came across an advert in a magazine recently for a USB StealthSurfer (http://www.securesurfer.co.nz/), and have been putting one together myself on my USB thumb drive. PortableApps.com has been invaluable in helping me with software.
Going through all the Forum topics, I can not find any link for anything like Anonymizer, which would hide my IP address while online. I came across PeerGuardian, but that seems to block groups of IPs, rather than actually shield my own IP address.
Include all apps from the opencd, and also make it available for other platforms. also, include google toolbar but if closed source, include mozilla googlebar
DOes anyone know if this exists as a portable app?
Perhaps some from http://www.theopencd.org/programs
Foxmail (the beautiful, famous Chinese email-client) runs well from a USB stick, but it writes quite a bunch of entries in the registry (under "Aerofox"). These registry entries seem only to be related to the personalized interface settings of Foxmail (like adjustment of toolbar, colors of text in mails to be used, etc.)
Could Foxmail be made portable, so it writes those entries in an .ini file rather than in the registry? Or maybe it could just be stopped from writing in the registry, keeping it's default settings?
The reason why I prefer Foxmail over all other email clients is that I can SEND with it mails via different accounts, aliases and smtp servers.
If your on the go in an office environment, PDF files are a must.
I work for the Marine Corps, and use a lot of PDF files, but sadly our computer systems are contracted out to EDS. So no one has rights to install things, and on some machines Adobe isn't there. Sometimes that just puts us in between a rock and a hard place.
GhostView is a great opensource PDF viewer. I believe it would be well worth the time and effort to make it portable. Also why not include Ghost Script so people can also create PDF files. The cost of the Adobe program to create PDF files is outrageous and would be benificial to a lot of people.
I had a thought while trying to find the stip of paper that has my logon info; namely it would be really neato to be able to have my thumbdrive log me in when I put it into the computer. (It has more memory than I do
Generally, I would requests all open source application to be made into portable apps.
It would be great if there is portable Inkscape and GanttProject 2.0 (http://ganttproject.sourceforge.net/)
