Firefox Portable

multiple instances

Submitted by tapsklaps on January 24, 2013 - 11:23am

Due to the default values in the sections [SinglePortableAppInstance] and [SingleAppInstance] it's possible, that

  1. two portable instances of Firefox can run simultaneously
  2. it's impossible, that a portable and locally installed instance of Firefox can run simultaneously

FF17.0.1 portable faster than 18.0.x

Submitted by katermerlin on January 23, 2013 - 6:42am

I'm using FFportable on a harddisk (Vista / WinXP). After updating v17.0.1 to 18.0 I found that starting FF is slower and tabs open often reluctantly. Also with version 18.0.1
It somtimes lasts 20-30 seconds until a website has openened.

However, the issue is not reproducible, means it also happens that websites are opend in a normal speed.

Also trying it in safe mode without addons the issue exists.
I tried to start it from a SD-Card but it became not better....

Also trying the FF on different PC (Notebook with XP) the problem persists.

Does anyone have any ideas.
All was fine until the update on 19 Jan 2013 to 18.0.1 and now I have no bookmarks, no history and the backups will not load. No new bookmarks can be made and no history is remembered.
I downloaded a new version of firefox portable but to no avail.

I have the regular Firefox installed on my laptop and Firefox Portable on my USB key. I'm more often using the laptop one and I was wondering if there was a way I could transfer or sync all my bookmarks, addons, settings and passwords between the laptop and usb drive? Is this what Firefox sync? I had a quick look at it but it I'm not sure if it sync addons though. Thanks for any help and this project has really improved and grown since the days of just Portable Firefox!

Updating addons for portable

Submitted by Hansj on January 12, 2013 - 8:44am

Apparently it's a little cloudy how to get the latest plugins for portable firefox, where to find the dll's after updating flash.

1. Close your portable firefox.
2. Open firefox on the local PC.
3. In URL write: about:config
4. In search: plugin.expose_full_path
(source: http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:plugins)
5. Set it: true
6. In URL write: about:plugins

And on this page it will now show the directory locations on local PC for every addon installed, so you can copy it to your portable plugin directory

Lately firefox has become very slow...

When it loads pages like youtube or imdb.com it just freeze for about a minute, then you get 1 click before it freeze for another. First write "youtube.com" and then write something in search, when it list something, click one, and then after about 1 minute it says "A script is taking too long to finish...", but clicking stop doesn't solve it...

There hasn't been any problems before and no new installs. It's got Flash video downloader and simple adblock 1.08 extentions and adobe acrobat and shockwave flash add-ons.

FF Portable as Default Browser

Submitted by gracie on January 10, 2013 - 3:19pm

I loved FF portable so much, I installed it on my desktop, thinking to use it as an alternative to IE for certain sites while having less "saved" data than a regular desktop installation of FF would. It works like a charm, started from a shortcut that leads to C:\FirefoxPortable\FirefoxPortable.exe instead of the Firefox.exe file. I was curious what would happen if I set FF to be my default browser, but when I do that from within FF portable, it sets the Firefox.exe file to be called---and that doesn't have any of my personalizations, bookmarks, etc.

Potential regression on v18 (internet connection behind a proxy)

Submitted by Ginko_Aloe on January 9, 2013 - 5:41am

Hi,

I may have experienced a regression after the v18 upgrade : i'm actually behind an enterprise Internet proxy. v17 and previous versions managed to connect properly using default system Internet proxy settings but apparently, v18 can't do the same.

Since setting manually proxy settings don't solve the problem (this proxy is pretty weird and do block a lot of stuff), I had to downgrade to v17. And it actually works.

Since I can't install anything on the laptop, I can't tell you if the bug is in Firefox v18 or in the portable edition of FFv18.
