Firefox Portable

Portable Firefox 2b1

Submitted by nofrak on July 10, 2006 - 3:13pm

Just in case anyone was wanting to try out the new beta of Firefox 2, here's how to make it portable.

If you would like to leave your current version unharmed, just make a copy of the Portable Firefox folder and call it something like PortableFirefox2.

To install the Beta:
1. go to the Mozilla FTP site, http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/bonecho-beta1-can...
and download the .zip version.

2. Unzip the file to the PortableFirefox (or PortableFirefox2) folder. If you're asked about overwriting files, click "yes".

Now you can use the portable Firefox launcher as you normally would to open the Beta.

Invalid page fault in Win98SE And Solution

Submitted by hobbyscripter on July 10, 2006 - 2:55am

Hi,
i found that the latest version of Portable Firefox Launcher would cause "invalid page fault" in Windows 98 SE. i'm not sure whether this error only occurs on my computer or not.

But later, i found out that this error doesn't occur if i turn "DisableSplashScreen" to "true". After a little try, i know that it may caused by the "PNG Format".

i found out that if the format of the splash image is PNG, then it would cause "invalid page fault" in Windows 98 SE. But if the format of the splash image is BMP, it works fine.

i hope the future release of Portable Firefox Launcher would use BMP as the splash image format. In that way, Portable Firefox won't got "invalid page fault" from some version of Windows 98 SE.

PFF 1.5.0.3 won't launch - tries to upgrade to 1.5.0.4 and crashes

Submitted by dsquared on July 8, 2006 - 11:15pm

I have been using & enjoying the portable apps (thanks John for the great work - my laptop has been replaced by a USB drive when I travel!)- all was going fine until I tried to launch my PFF 1.5.0.3. PFF never goes to my home page instead PFF tries to upgrade itself to 1.5.0.4 but fails to do so automatically. Then PFF attempts to d/l and install the FF 1.5.0.4 onto my thumb drive.
Is there a way to disable the automatic upgrade checker on my PFF? or am up the ole effluent creek in a leaky boat?

Moving from installed FF to PFF

Submitted by mb on July 7, 2006 - 11:22am

Hello, i currently have FF installed on my PC (and use PFF on usb for other PCs).
but i would like to make PFF my main/only version of FF.. however my FF is pretty heavily customised, and i dont want to re-start doing all the settings, extensions and bookmarks all over again..
the aim is to copy PFF onto a ramdisk at startup to prevent HDD seeks when browsing (and maybe copy any changes back at shutdown). Also how would i get the start menu's 'internet' link to point to this ramdisk'ed version of PFF.
so how should i go about doing this? (the ff -> pff part)

Master Certificate not found.

Submitted by AdHonores on July 6, 2006 - 5:16pm

Hello

Mozilla Master Certificate works well when Firefox is launched from "App\firefox\Firefox.exe", with the master certificate (systemSignature.jar) in the same directory as Firefox.exe, and the Issuer CA certificate loaded in the certificate store.

The Mozilla Master certificate is not working (not found?) when Firefox is launched from the PortableFirefoxe.exe file.

I've even copied systemSignature.jar file in every directories of PFF without any success either.

Can somebody help me with this?

Separate instances of port firefox

Submitted by jsimlo on July 2, 2006 - 6:50am

Hi,

is there a possibility to add some support to run portable firefox in several instances. Right now, the portable firefox searches for running instances and if there is one, it only opens a new window of the running application.

But, if the firefox crashes (and it does from time to time, do not argue :)), all the windows are gone, all the work. I used to open several instances of iexplorer to prevent such damage. One instance for work, one for occasional fun, etc.

So, is there a possibility to open multiple independent processes of the firefox with the same settings? I do not care about the history, cache, cookies. But I do care about the extensions and bookmarks.

Virus in Portable Firefox?

Submitted by rotor55 on July 2, 2006 - 6:37am

Hello,

I just found a Trojan in my PortableFirefox.exe. My Scanner (Antivir) told me that it found a trojan called: TR/Dldr.Zlob.VV.2. When I tried to download a fresh one from different mirrors, it always found the trojan in the "fresh" archive again. So I am not sure if the PortableFirefox.exe is reinfacted everytime again or there is a trojan on the mirrors???

N.M.
