Windows Search and Thunderbird

Submitted by fsmaus on February 5, 2010 - 12:14pm

Hello everybody,

I was trying to set up Windows Search in order to search my Thunderbird messages. Has anyone had success on that? What has to be done?

Some more detail: I have found the Thunderbird checkbox "Globale Suche und Nachrichtenindizierung aktivieren" (activate global search and indexing of messages) (about:config) on the properties pane. This seems to relate to a Thunderbird internal search, correct?

I am using Thunderbird Portable 3.0.1, located on my harddrive; Windows Search 4 (latest version), both on an XP SP3 system.

Thanks for your help!

Solved Thunderbird 3.x.x sluggish on USB

After installing TB3 on my 4gb Sandisk Cruzer micro I found it to be really slow in terms navigating between e-mails or deleting messages/feeds.

I found a few posts about this and went through defragging and deleting MSF files which both helped for a few hours. I also have indexing switched off.

I now believe I have fixed it by changing the USB mode.

Within device manager find your USB drive
Right click on it and choose properties
Choose the Policies tab
Ensure "Optimize for performance" is chosen

Multiple instances - one for the wishlist

My wife, Anne, and I both use Thunderbird Portable (running from separate USB sticks on the same machine) for our email. But we can't have two instances of TB running at the same time so if one of us wants to check our email we have to close the other person's instance of TB first.

I understand that using the "standard" version of TB, multiple instances are possible by adding a command line parameter but of course the PortableApps menu doesn't allow for these.

Is there any way to make it possible to run multiple instances of TB Portable?

Regards

Nick

[Fixed] Thunderbird 3.0.1 leaves files (Crash Reports)

I just found a bug in the latest Thunderbird release. It leaves behind a folder called "Thunderbird" in %APPDATA% with the usual Mozilla Crash Reports folder in it including a file with the install date.

Firefox and Seamonkey handle the folder correctly (=backup and restore), it seems that this functionality has been forgotten in the Thunderbird Launcher.

Tested on Win XP SP3 limited account.

Can anyone confirm this?

EDIT: This has been fixed.

Make Portable Thunderbird use my Portable Firefox settings/profile when clicking links

I have portable thunderbird and firefox installed. When I click on a link in an email, it opens in firefox, but that instance of firefox does not use my normal settings (customized toolbar, history settings, ad-block, etc.)

Is there a way to fix that?

TB3, lightning and Birthdays

Submitted by robw on January 23, 2010 - 6:14am

Hi all,

With TB 3.01 coming out (thanks!!), I tried again to upgrade, and with some tips posted on the forum I got TB 3.01 to work Smile

I also installed the latest (beta) Lightning addon, and that works just fine too.
But I was under the impression that with the new 'Birthday/Age' fields in the Address Book, these would show up in Lightning automagically as well....

As the plugin I used to use (Birthday Reminder) doesn't work for 3.01, I'm looking for a way to add the Birthdays into Lightning.

Cannot see my folders nor images.

I had no problem in this respect before!
Why now?
Why do not I get any reply?

OS Windows 7 Home Premium Dutch
ThunderbirdPortable 2.0.0.23.

All of a sudden I cannot get my mailboxes on screen anymore.
At start up I only get the screen about a.o accounts and advanced features.

At the same time I cannot get images in my mail, nor see the option whether I want to show them or not.

I hope you do understand what I mean.

I am axious to read the solution.

Local Folders x 3 - cannot figure..

I upgraded my PTB from 2.0.0.23 to the new 3.1 today - actually I upgraded my 3 different instances of PTB, each with 4 mail accounts, to the new 3.1 and with 2 of the 3 it went like a breeze - like it always does!! - but with one of my instances the upgrade runs without problems, all my mails and address books are present, my add-ons upgrades without problems BUT I am stuck with three instances of "Local Folders". Usually I have only one and I don't use it.

Thunderbird 3.0 lost mails and read only

Submitted by gpelous on January 22, 2010 - 1:10am

Hello all
I have been using Portable apps (and thunderbird apps) for a while now. No problem so far. but today, major issue :
I unplugged my USB key safely, then plugged it again and launched Thunderbird. At first it was ok but all my mails folder had dissapeared. So I close/open again only to get this error message :
"Mozilla Thunderbird appears to be running from a location that is read only" and so on. So I can't access Thunderbird anymore and I don't have my mails, adress book and Agenda.
