The "Details" link is sometimes dead and always full

Submitted by lwc on February 21, 2014 - 3:10am

The "Details" link seems to be dead in apps in which it's under the download link and not inside it. In other words, in freewares. For example, Skype Portable and Balabolka Portable.

Also, it's always a full (though at least relative) URL instead of just an anchor. It probably causes some browsers to refresh the page in vain, causing you unneeded bandwidth and slowing the process for users.

Why is there a portable apps version of Notepad++? Doesn't the original developers offer a portable version?

Why is there a portable apps version of Notepad++? Doesn't the original developers offer a portable version? On their site: http://notepad-plus-plus.org/download/v6.5.4.html, they offer a non-installer version. Does that mean that their version is portable and its settings are saved as portable?

Got portable Netbeans, but it can't detect JDK? Also, what is Java?

Submitted by mindstormer on February 19, 2014 - 12:23am

I downloaded the portable Netbeans from PortableApps.com then ran the JDK installation, pointing it to install to the JDK folder in NetBeans Portable > App > jdk. Do I need to change the config files or something?

Also, is it truly portable or will I need some of Java pre-installed in another computer for me to use this portable Netbeans on it?

Platform not installing

Submitted by jhuizingh on February 18, 2014 - 9:56am

I am having trouble installing the portable apps platform. I downloaded PortableApps.com_Platform_Setup_11.2.exe. I am running a Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro with Windows 8.1.

When I try to run the installer, it just says "This App can't run on your PC. To find a version for your PC, check with the software publisher."

I think I saw that it supports windows 8.1, so I'm not sure what's going on. Any thoughts?

Some questions regarding portable programs

Submitted by mindstormer on February 18, 2014 - 12:00am

I always prefer portable versions of a program because they leave no traces behind (whereas their non-portable counterparts not only leave trace, but slow down the system over time due to the cluttering of excessive and redundant registries). Because many developers of the original non-portable programs do not create portable versions, we have portable versions created by other developers and I have some questions regarding this:

Smart Defrag should be removed

Submitted by phaelax on February 17, 2014 - 12:57pm

I had the utility installed on my flash drive for about a year. I just tried to run it only to have it auto update, install itself on the local drive, spam me with popups to buy Advanced System Care 7, and installed several Chrome extensions; Advanced SystemCare Surfing Protection, Amazon Shopping Assistant by Spigot, Domain Error Assistant, Ebay Shopping Assistant by Spigot. All without permission.

I had none of these extensions prior to running Smart Defrag Portable. I then ran malwarebytes and it has littered my pc with garbage:

suggestions for future PA version

Submitted by user123 on February 14, 2014 - 10:17am

not sure if this is the right place and i know some of the things i'm writing have been said before.

1. re-size the PA window size - i know its hard since the background theme images are fixed sizes, so instead of allowing dynamic resizing, maybe allow predefined sizes. basically i need more height Smile

2. sub folders - i know many asked for it and got workarounds and so on...
but nothing beats the need for real sub folders/categories.

General Application Hanging

Submitted by jbooth45 on February 12, 2014 - 4:00pm

I searched the forums and found similar discussions but not anything conclusive. My problem is that no matter which application I run from my portableapps platform, they will periodically hang for 10-20 seconds. The applications don't crash though. After said amount of time they will catch up and the "Not Responding" will go away and all is well. I have been tolerating it thus far just because I love the whole concept of portable apps, but it really does kill efficiency when I have to wait for the program to respond.
