USB HDD Hot-Plug vs. Removeable

Hmm... so this is rather annoying. I use an external hard drive for my PortableApps, and have an annoyance that has existed for awhile, but now that I think about it, only exists Vista/7, and UP-TO-DATE XP (e.g. I didn't have this problem with XP when I first got it, but don't know when it started). After plugging in my USB HD, it shows up as a Local Disk under My Computer, not a Removable Disk. However, it does get listed under the "Eject Removable Devices" tray icon. If I try to eject it, it tells me it's not removable. Ok...

I've posted a quick address book icon app for those that would like to be able to directly launch the Mozilla Thunderbird, Portable Edition address book from the PortableApps.com Platform. It'll automatically create it and start it up for you.

Today, I will nag about:

  • Clicking Next a lot is a little annoyance, but can really kick you hard.
  • It would be great to just click Install.
  • Would it be hard?
  • For those who want to customize, clicking a check mark isn't much effort.
  • For those who didn't install the platform, it could show the "Where to Install" box automatically.
  • For those who get frustrated, there can be a menu option or something.

The Nagging:

PeaZip 2.7 released

Submitted by giorgiotani on September 15, 2009 - 8:26am

Hi, PeaZip 2.7 was released today
http://peazip.sourceforge.net/

The 2.7 line development was focused into improving the extraction and compression stages' UI, also, many back end binaries were updated.
Full change log here: http://peazip.sourceforge.net/changelog.html

EDIT:
I've published PeaZip Portable 2.7 on my SourceForge's space, this is my first attempt in packaging a PAF installer (I've used existing 2.6.3 PAF as model) and to publishing the result in PortableApps, so I apologize in advance if there is something wrong in the PAF or in the procedure I followed

How to change password.

Submitted by ristof on September 13, 2009 - 10:45pm

A big HEY to the forum community!

I'd like to know if anyone can help me please.

I registered and got the activation email message, clicked on it and it asked me to change my password. I believe the process is somewhat different to how other sites work in that it doesn't ask you to specify one before signing up.

What happened was I set a password and confirmed but when I clicked "save" it stayed on the same page.

Is this right?

Thanks

Final Warning: listless

listless - The next time you direct your abusive attitude toward someone on this forum you will receive a one month suspension to your account. You've been warned before and you've chosen to ignore those warnings. I am not a fan of having to police forum conduct, but acting like this toward a developer of a third party app who took the time to join and post in this forum is inexcusable.

Codifying Some Support

I don't know if anyone is keeping up with the gVim thread, but I posted about something that I thought the Release Team should handle (or at least consider). As I posted here, https://portableapps.com/node/15654#comment-126364, I thought the the release team should formalize where the whole Perl\Python\ruby, etc debate.

*Perl*
I'll start with perl as I butcher it quite well. There's two Perl releases in the forums currently:

Backup and Installation

Submitted by Aqualung on September 8, 2009 - 2:27pm

1. Can I install PortableApps in a folder on my hard drive? Or does it have to be on a portable drive?
2. If yes, would that installation be any different from an installation on a USB dongle, say?
3. What does "Backup" do? Is that a simple .zip file generation/packaging? Or is it more than that?
4. What does "Restore Backup" do? Is that simple unzipping/unpacking? Or is it more than that?
