Check flash drive's healthiness

Submitted by luis69 on February 8, 2008 - 8:52pm

Hello,

which is the best way for me to know if my flash drive is still in good shape?

I've formatted my 4GB as NTFS and I've been happily using it for the last 6 months (thanks John for making me discover the portable world!)

I've no sign of my drive getting worse, but I would like to prevent it to lose data and move to a new one before it becomes unreliable.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Simeon, I'm seeing multiple errors in the logs generated by your user account (and only yours). In the error log it's a mySQL error about "Got a packet bigger than 'max_allowed_packet'" while it's attempting to update the cache of pages you are browsing apparently.

So, are you seeing any errors? Are you doing anything odd while browsing? COuld you try logging out, clearing your cache, and logging back in?

Duplicate Portable Apps (1 desktop installed & 1 portable) trouble ?

Submitted by rix182 on February 8, 2008 - 4:00pm

Hi.

May I ask you will it has a problem if we have 2 version of the softwares ?

I have a software installed on my desktop computer, then I try to run the portable version of the same software. It runs fine.
Its just that after that I can't run the desktop installed software, it says it lacks of some personalization files.

Then I try to uninstall / reinstall the desktop software, it kept sayin that "the software is in use, please close the program" while on ctrl+alt+del i couldn't find the software is working hence i can't close anything.

I really like the mac-on-stick portable mac app. its really great to have that other computer to put programs and files in and be able to completely customize. plus I can take it with me which is another plus.

but that is a very limited thing. its a very old version of mac operating system that three arent too many useful things for it. but there are other operating systems.

are there any linux or windows (95,98,2000,xp, whatever) emulators that function like thae mac one. EG: it runs in a window or fullscreen instead of having to boot the computer with the flash drive

splash screens

Submitted by tmaibaum on February 7, 2008 - 2:32pm

(First off, I can well imagine this has been asked before, still I couldn't find any thread on it. Perhaps I just haven't been looking hard enough. If so, advance apologies to the regulars round here.)

Is there a way to turn off the PortableApps splash screens?

Having trouble with PA restore utility

Submitted by zeemon on February 7, 2008 - 11:48am

Hi all,

First let me say - love portable apps - big time.

TB lost all my settings and emails yesterday, although lightning was intact. Got lost in the profile process - moved on to format/restore. Running PA Restore, no files get copied - weird. I've seldom had success with the PA restore program.

** Just got it restored to 2-3-08 sweet. Only way I got it to work was to extract files from backup and copy to thumb drive. **

Make certain applications recognizeable by portable apps menu

I'm not quite sure where to post this so I will try here first.

I am basically trying to find out whether or not you can add stand-alone programs like .exe programs that can be used soely on a USB that are not available on PortableApps.com and have the Portable Apps Menu display it?

For example...
