General discussions of portable apps and news.
I created a autorun program, that only runs a specified application(s) when it detects an internet connection. I use my drive in a variety of places and not all of them have internet. I had set my Thunderbird and other apps to autorun, but got tired of them popping up even when I didn't have internet So I wrote a small program that detects a connection, and optionally asks you if you would like to start your applications, if there is no connection nothing happens.
Is there a way to create an installation package for installing the portableapps software and a customized set of applications on 50-100 USB thumb drives? I would like to make this package available so users could easily run an installation and have it install the necessary mobile software into a portableapps format without having to selectively download and install the software. Also, is there a way to package updates for the different mobile application software as updates become available?
All,
I have read some posts regarding which drives are good for Portable apps, and I wanted to share my experience. I run most of my apps as portable apps on my USB drive, so everything will run exactly the same at work and at home. I even have some old legacy Windows apps that I run entirely from my USB drive. I had a 2 year old 2 GB Lexar Lightning drive that I was happy with, but I needed more space, so I researched which drives were supposed to be fast.
can't belive this app, will this work when i bring it to a computer with admin rights? how can they not stop it?
Some of you may already know, but those of u that havent heard of darksusb USE CAUTION WHEN USING COMPUTERS AT SCHOOL OR AT THE LIBRARY. So far i have heard that this Trojan originated from mexico. I recently got it from my school while using the computer in my engineering class. I scanned my usb and it was never detected by Norton or Mcafee, so far the only scanner that will remove it is ClamWin that is found on this site (thanks 4 saving my usb) I will tell you what the trojan did to my usb.
I would like to be able to download a package that had all the apps installed already, large flash drives are becoming more the norm ($30 for an 8gb drive) and I'd like to have the complete collection of apps with me, for those times when you need an app that you might not usually use.
What I see in the list of the portable app menu is like:
- Foo Portable
- Bar Portable
- XXXX Portable
What's the reason for adding "Portable" string after each application's name?
I have VLC Media Player Portable, but it isn't quite what I'm looking for. I use PortableApps on my portable hard drive and I keep all of my music and videos on the drive. I'd like to have a portable media player program that is able to maintain a media library on the drive rather than have to direct it to my music every time.
I was thinking that WinAmp portable would be a possibility, but it seems like that is against the terms of use on WinAmp... so that's out of the question. Are there any alternatives availible? Thanks for the help!
Some of these do require installation but the EXE can be copied from the computer and placed on a portable device. No extra files are needed and they run fine.
