PLEASE HELP

Submitted by Cody Macri on December 10, 2012 - 1:50am

I love the idea of the portable apps platform, but honestly, after three days of using it and trying to get it to work I've had a horrible experience . It's just been a horrible buggy mess. The platform crashes constantly, apps wont load, I've had to re-install like 5 times, sometimes I had to install then reformat and re-install because it didn't install correctly. Basically everything that could go wrong has. So I was wondering if this is a typical experience for this app or is there something I'm doing horribly wrong.

Problem with Updater on V11 & V12: It detects new files to be downloaded and installed - but doesn't do it !

Intro:
Longtime user of [illegal suite], I am switching back to my old PortableApps due to many facts, mainly the very bad communication with customers, very slow updates and for a 6 month break from Jun to Nov 12, where the project was dead and unreachable for any answers. Prefer Portable Apps and John Haller Wink

Actual problem: Having installed PortableApps.Platform on different machines, I recognized that on my main test system I got a very nasty problem, both with V11 and V12B:

Final Draft Software?

Submitted by Heidi Haaland on December 4, 2012 - 8:28pm

New user here (as of today), so I apologize for the rookie question: There are references elsewhere on the site about using your "favorite software" and a search didn't turn up any topics on one that I use frequently, i.e. Final Draft. This past fall FD released an app for ipads/pods only, so too bad for anyone who bought a windows 8 last week Wink Anyway, is it possible download a copy of the software (or any software, for that matter) into portableapps and if so, how?

Is it possible to hide menu tooltips?

Submitted by GrahamG on December 4, 2012 - 12:25pm

Not sure why I never noticed the tooltip before when hovering over a menu item in the PA menu. I've searched through the site and noticed a large number of requests to include it.

My question is: is there any setting that hides the tooltips if you don't want to see them? I know where my apps are stored, have a good idea who the developers are and the version of the app being used. For me it just creates 'noise' when using the menu.

Will gladly accept that various people wanted it, but was the display of this detail made optional or obligatory? Can it be switched off if needs be?

Portable Proxy Settings Switcher?

Submitted by aSystemOverload on December 4, 2012 - 3:55am

Hi All,

Is there any PortableApps.com apps that can quick switch between Proxy Settings. At work I have to use an automatic config script to enable things like GDrive and everything else that isn't Corp to work. When I get home, I then have to uncheck that get everything to work at home.

Would prefer an App that allows me to manage the settings, if it's available?

stupid question about upcoming File associations featue - what happens if there are multiple associations?

Submitted by Grantwhy on December 3, 2012 - 7:07am

stupid/silly question about upcoming File associations feature.

What happens when there are multiple PortableApps (PA) running and they have different/conflicting file associations?

eg: PA.1 associates a file type to Program X, and PA.2 associates the same file type with Program Y.

Lets use .jpg in this example

If I have both PA.1 and PA.2 running (easy enough to do with multiple USB devices and/or installed to different hard drives)
and I open a .jpg file, which program opens the file?

Program X? Program Y? Both? Neither?

TrustPort USB AntiVirus & PA Platform - Write Errors...SORTED

Submitted by GrahamG on December 1, 2012 - 7:20am

Just setting up a new SSD drive with PortableApps.

Ran the updater option to check app updates. Everything honky dorky.

Came to close PA (as I'm using Portable Start Menu as my PA launcher - not any more!) and PA platform kept coming up with the following error prompt:

"Unable to write to:
PortableApps\PortableApps.com\Data\PortableAppsMenu.ini"

Updated apps - how to find the release notes

Submitted by cander0000 on November 29, 2012 - 5:15pm

When PortableApps starts, or more specifically, the update runs, it lists a number of apps with updates. But it is not very clear what has changed in each app. How would one easily find the release notes for each app?

I have trouble even finding release notes from within the portableapps.com site. Most of the product pages describe the product itself very well. For a new user of that app - exactly what's needed. For existing users - what has changed between versions is more salient.

High DPI scaling

Submitted by thany on November 29, 2012 - 4:45pm

The PA.com main menu doesn't scale to Windows' DPI setting. The menu stays exactly the same size in pixels, which is inconvenient for high-DPI screens that really need this setting.

The fonts do scale, but everything get cramped together, as menu items do not scale, and neither does the menu window itself.

Using PA.com 11.2 on Windows 7 x64 and 125% DPI scale.
