Win7 wants to run Portable Apps as Administrator

Submitted by JTHM on June 18, 2012 - 3:57am

Hi Folks

I'm having trouble with Win7 wanting to run Portable Apps as Administrator.

With the launcher named as Start.exe, Win7 wants to run it as Administrator and applies a little shield to the launcher icon on my USB stick. If I rename it as anything else, i.e. "Start1.exe" or "PortableApps.exe", there's no problem.

Update changes directory

Submitted by WoosterUK on June 16, 2012 - 3:20am

I'm running the Platform within my Dropbox folder, in Dropbox/Applications/PortableApps.com. When I most recently ran the Platform, it asked me to update, which I did, but the update was deposited a folder down, in Dropbox/PortableApps.com.

Obviously, as a portable app it's not a great amount of effort to shunt the folders around and this doesn't cause problems, but it is equally clearly not how this is meant to work! Not least because if the Platform is in the wrong folder, it doesn't pick up the applications available.

Are other people seeing the same behaviour?

Minor bugs I noticed

Submitted by Gimme_P on June 15, 2012 - 8:58pm

hi all,

There is a list of bugs/disfunction, but nothing huge, that are still not solved:

  • Multiple instances of PortableAppsPlatform.exe: If you launch twice the platform, only one is 'completely' loaded and you can see in the Task manager that there are two instances of the PA Platform, the first one takes about 8MB of memory and the second is about only 1MB.

[Fixed] Ooops!-as-you-type

Submitted by zoc on June 15, 2012 - 5:32am

After the update to 10.1.1, pressing keys does not launch the search box as it used to. Instead, now pressed keys seem to act as "shortcuts" for generic the menu entries on the left. Ex. "d" launches the explorer on the Documents folder, "m" on the Music folder etc.

The "/" search launch shortcut does not work either. Now, to launch the search box, it takes two keys, "sa".

This does not seem to be a planed (and documented) change, so I will assume it's a bug.

If so, I sure hope it can be fixed soon. (And if I can do anything to help speed up the fix, I'll gladly contribute.)

A Couple of Feature Requests

Submitted by shai on June 11, 2012 - 4:20pm

Hi,

Would be nice to have the following two features:

1) Ability to install portable apps in a sub directory under \PortableApps (I would like to be able to differentiate between native PortableApps.com and other portable apps I downloaded elsewhere)

2) In the launcher, it would be nice if you could see which actual file the shortcut is pointing at

Thanks,
-Shai

Problems running on W8 32 bit Consumer Preview

Submitted by oldrover on June 9, 2012 - 6:25pm

I have been having problems getting PortableApps to run on W8. It will not run at all off the memory stick and when I try to run off the hard disk I get a message stating that the application failed to start because it's side-by-side configuration is incorrect.

I also get the following messages in the event log...

Activation context generation failed for "C:\Users\h\Desktop\Portable Apps\Start.exe".Error in manifest or policy file "C:\Users\h\Desktop\Portable Apps\Start.exe" on line 1. The attribute nAme is not permitted in this context on element assemblyIdentity.

Possible error in portabilizing CamStudio as cause of update errors

Submitted by PortableJeff on June 8, 2012 - 1:43am

I am the sole user of the PC, am part of the Administrators group, and am running Vista SP2. I added CamStudio to my list of apps, and it downloaded and installed correctly. It can be run successfully from the installation.

However, I have tried 3 times to use PortableApps to update it, when it showed that an update was available. Each attempt has failed with the same error. As soon as the download is finished, and installation begins, it stops immediately with the message "Can't initialize plugins directory. Please try again later."

The PortableApps.com Platform 10.0.1 won't backup from Hard Drive

Submitted by phay on June 5, 2012 - 3:47am

Hi, I have The PortableApps.com Platform 10.0.1 installed on my 2nd hard drive (I do this so I don't have to do full installs for infrequently run apps, thus minimizing the size of my registry).

When I run the backup utility for this locally installed copy of The PortableApps.com Platform, it begins by backing up its own PortableApps directory, and then attempts to backup the local drive (D:) itself (at which point it just hangs). Is this a limitation / bug in the PortableApps.com software ?

Thanks,
phay
