What are the issues when running from Read-Only media (DVD)?

As PortableApps app files move about when they run, is it not possible to run them from read-only media?

Is there any way I can run PortableApps from a DVD?

Having them to hand on a virtual DVD when setting up a new Hyper-V virtual server would be very useful to me, as they have no USB support.

Lock the menu to the desktop

Submitted by SCMedic84809 on April 1, 2011 - 11:35am

Is there an app that allows the menu to stay visible on the desktop? I do not like having to click the small icon in the tray on the taskbar. Also, I have downloaded PA 2.0 hoping to be able to resize the menu. Either that is not possible or I have overlooked something. Can the menu be resized?

Thanks everyone,
Greg

Suggestion: Overwrite default browser "on-the-fly"

Submitted by mgutt on March 31, 2011 - 12:09pm

Hi,

one of the things that bothers me in portable apps is that I need to check for every app how links are opened in the browser and how I'm able to change that to my portable one.

After I was successfull in changing the target browser in thunderbird I completly failed at the messenger. I've made a lot of research on pidgin (it had the feature in the past, but they removed it), miranda and trillian. But no one is able to select a non default browser. And there are many other apps that aren't able, too. f.e. pdfs or simple word documents with hyperlinks etc.

So I've asked myself:

Absolute paths in various PortableApp.ini files

Submitted by mszil on March 27, 2011 - 8:41pm

I know this probably goes against the grain, but I was wondering if there's a way to put an absolute path in the ini file used by various portable apps. I've tried this with 2 programs (Thunderbird & OpenOffice) and in both cases it seems that absolute paths are not honored.

For example, in OpenOfficePortable.ini I've tried every variation I can think of for this line:

SettingsDirectory=d:\OpenOffice\Settings

Autorun.inf should be phased out?

Hello all,

I've seen some funny behavior on a computer I use PortableApps on. Trend Micro OfficeScan, following (presumably) an update, now goes bat **** crazy on Autorun.inf (Windows XP machine, but it got the KB update that disabled autorun on rewritable removable devices, so it normally doesn't use autorun.inf anyway, except to show the device name/icon in My Computer (which, ironically, still do show up). It does this every time the drive is connected. Can't even delete autorun.inf to make it not do that, at least until I can get it home.

Arranging Apps Into "App Folders"

Submitted by soverigndelta on March 22, 2011 - 10:47am

Hi guys, first time on the forum! Smile

An idea about cleaning up the PA.c Platform GUI with folders allowing the user to multiple apps into a folder to sort them out. For example, the open office suite downloads all the apps and places each one on the list of the GUI and takes a lot of room up. Could folders be sorted out to tidy it up?

Thanks guys,
