.BAT files and Menu Customization

Submitted by xlegs on May 20, 2008 - 8:54pm

I am utilizing a trick that automatically opens certain apps during autoplay. I point autorun.inf to a batch file and it does the trick. I open up my Hottnotes (sticky notes) and DexposE2 (Mac Expose Clone). They both run through the system tray, but it is annoying to close the menu and the other apps individually. Is there any way to point the close function on the PortableApps Menu to a batch file witch will close all these apps in one swoop? I also need help in actually writing the batch file, because I don't know how to kill processes from a batch file. Any help?

Thanks

Search box and launcher menu improvements

Submitted by Wernight on May 13, 2008 - 2:57am

With about 60 applications on my USB key here are some important improvements needed:
1. A search like Vista's start menu or Kickoff menu (see below).
2. Categorize content
3. More functions like the Kickoff menu of OpenSUSE.

The Kickoff Start Menu is the new start menu of OpenSUSE which impressed me a lot because it provides fast access to everything. Here's a screen-shot:

Auto-virus protection

Submitted by Wernight on May 13, 2008 - 2:48am

Summary:
Provide safety against virus infection on the USB key.

Problem case:
As the USB key with applications moves from PC to PC each PC possibly infected by a virus could contaminate the whole USB key and even possibly the next PC in the chain.

The most risky elements are:
1. The autorun
2. The launcher menu
3. Portable applications
4. Other documents

Solution proposal:

running PA from Mesh :)

Submitted by offbeatmammal on May 9, 2008 - 11:02pm

I know it's not a listed option on the "device" menu, but I'm running PA from the new Microsoft Mesh platform (yay! I got a beta invite. Sorry, I have no spares left at the moment) and it works pretty well so far.

I've got FileZilla and Firefox following me from machine to machine - and working (apart from a small userid/password saving issue with FF - posted in the FF forum here)

Would love to see PA auto-mount when connecting to the Mesh folder like it does on insert of a USB key but it's no big deal.

Remove Drive Error

Submitted by entrepreneur on May 9, 2008 - 12:27pm

I've been having an issue when I try to remove the drive after using portable apps.

When I try to remove the USB drive, I go to "remove device safely", but I get an error saying that I can't remove it and to try later. I also tried going to my computer, right clicking on the drive and "eject" but I get the same thing.

No applications are running, nothing from the USB drive or the internal drive. I went to windows task manager and it appeared that firefox was still running (under processes) but not applications. Once I ended the FF process, I was able to remove it.
