Clamwin Portable Database update

Submitted by PegZ on August 15, 2010 - 4:44am

Hi, I just installed on my memory stick, and ran Clamwin. It asked to update the virus datatabse, however, the update failed.
Is there a specific way to update the portable ClamWin database? Here's the failure pasted below...
Regards,
Kevin

ClamWinPortableDBUpdate.exe cannot write to db folder

Submitted by w nightshade on July 6, 2010 - 8:17am

I am running ClamWinPortableDBUpdate.exe v0.3.3, and when I do I get the following error:

ERROR: Can't create temporary directory ..\ClamWinPortable\Data\db\clamav-e30037
134ddd96a09378e26e465f5b5a.000016d8.clamtmp
Hint: The database directory must be writable for UID 0 or GID 0

as far as I can tell, the directory is writable, and if I do a manual update from the ClamWin GUI itself, it works fine.

Can anyone provide any insight? I find the updater VERY useful, and would hate to go back to manually running updates if I don't absolutely have to.

ClamWin: Trouble getting "incremental" update of the daily

I'm having a problem updating and would like to see if it's a "just me" situation or if anyone else is having a problem.

Does anyone know what this means

Hint: The database directory must be writable for UID 0 or GID 0

My problem seems to be with getting the incremental update, it fails and so has to download the full daily.cvd instead of patching it to become daily.cld, which means dowloading 2 MBs as opposed to a few KBs, or 6 minutes as opposed to a few seconds on a modem.

This has happened to me 4 times.

ClamWin: 0.96.1 - 0.95.3 = 0.8

With a lot of apps getting out of date with the latest version
may mean only a feature or two missing or some bug fixed (or new
bug introduced.) Mostly not crucially important.

Seems that ClamWin should be up to date regardless if a new portable apps
format or launcher is ready.

Am I wrong to not want to rely on portable ClamWin?

It is so nice to have it on USB and go from computer to computer feeling fairly
sure I am scanning for virii with a clean device.

ClamWIN and Putty Socks proxy

Submitted by irishbiker on May 4, 2010 - 9:33am

Hi All

I've setup my Portable Apps pendrive to use Putty's socks option which should allow me to access my home system (in theory) from anywhere where there is an open port.

My question is, is it possible to manually setup ClamWin to use Socks4 as currently the proxy option seems to default to 5 and not accessing putty's socks port.

Thanks

Paul

A reader reminded us of the impending April 15 deadline for the support of ClamAV version 0.94 and earlier. ClamAV will be releasing signatures greater than 980 bytes on May 15. ClamAV version 0.94 and earlier will not be able to deal with these. To prevent issues on April 15 there will be a signature released that effectively disables version older than 1 year (version 0.94 and earlier). The application will not start.
