Problems installing Firefox Portable v3.6.5

Submitted by damaster on January 19, 2012 - 5:54pm

In order to use TiddlyWiki and work around security issues, I need to use pre-4 Firefox, so I'm trying to install it on my USB drive from PortableApps.com. However, there are some things that are not working for me and I could use a few more pointers.

1. I installed FirefoxPortableLegacy36_3.6.25_English.paf.exe into my F:\FirefoxPortable directory as FirefoxPortable.exe. I copied the FirefoxPortable.ini file to the same location and modified it to allow MultipleInstances of Firefox (I usually run 9.0.1 for general stuff). This seems to work, but I'm wondering if I've fully set it up.

Firefox Portable and Plugins

How do I do a clean install of Firefox Portable to my USB Drive? Every time I try to install it, it automatically seems to install the extensions that are on the version of Firefox on the hard disk of the computer I'm using. I don't want any extensions at the start...I want to add them to my portable version as I see fit. Suggestions?

I'd just uninstall the extensions I don't want (AVG and AVG Safe Search most notably) but they don't even have an Uninstall button..I think because they're so dated.

SpeedyFox - does it speed up Firefox portable?

SpeedyFox - does it speed up Firefox portable?

http://www.crystalidea.com/speedyfox
(as a bonus, it seems to run portably Smile )

If so, any suggestions on how often it should be run? (and are there any better alternatives)

I've used SpeedyFox before and it seemed to make a difference (on both a Portable and regular version of FF), but having to manually point it to where FF Portable was installed (and as I've got portable FF and FF Legacy36, doing it twice) meant I fell out of the habit of using SpeedyFox.

Shockwave In Action!

OK, I dont know if this trick only works for XP or just me, but i just:

1) installed the regular download
2) copy the files - NOT THE FOLDERS INCLUDED - but just the files from both folders inside of the adobe folder (director, and whatever the other one is i forgot)
3) paste each time into the data/plugins/ folder of your ffp.
4) uninstall from the computer using add or remove programs(doesnt delete copy you made of the files in plugins folder
5) closed, then opened ffp, went to the welcome test page -
and it worked for me

When firefox is running and open in bckground it always pops to front window and takes attention away from what I was doing.

Updating FireFox Portable

Submitted by phlegm on January 12, 2012 - 4:37pm

I thinking of deploying Firefox Portable on desktops since it is a flat folder install. The beauty of this is I just need to copy the folder and it's fully functional. No install / uninstall commands.

My Question is how can I update this in the future? Can I run the command:

"\\...FirefoxPortable_9.0.1_English.paf.exe" /s (example)

and update Firefox portable without any fuss?

Thanks

Question about Firefox Portable Beta

Submitted by Noob Newbie on January 10, 2012 - 9:47pm

The PortableApps.com release of Firefox 10 Beta3 is taking a long time so I decided to use the internal Firefox updater instead of waiting for and update to be available from the PA.c Updater.

I started PA > clicked on Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition (9 Beta) > after Firefox started, I clicked on Help > clicked on About Firefox > clicked on Check for Updates > Downloaded and installed the update in that window > restarted Firefox.

When I click on Help > About Firefox, it now appears "10.0" below Firefox logo.

However, I have some questions:

Fx Portable hidden config feature breaks browser's update installations on Fx Portable 11.0a2 and Fx Portable 12.0a1

Ever since the Fx Windows UAC change bug 481815: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=481815 for those using a Firefox Portable version of Aurora 11.0a2 and Nighty 12.0a1(Created using zip builds), and you are using the Fx portable hidden config option setting to change 'firefox.exe' process name(example: firefoxaurora.exe), updates would download and then fail to install.

Portable FireFox 9.0.1 not running under Windows XP with SP 3

Submitted by John van Someren on January 3, 2012 - 11:04am

From my work computer I try to launch Firefox 9.0.1 from my memory stick. My computer here uses XP with SP 3. I get the application's flash window but this is immediately followed by it crashing and I see the standard XP message window saying "firefox.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

I get the same message if I launch FireFox.exe manually, ie from the folder it resides in on the memory stick.

I don't get this problem at home where I have Windows 7.

The portable app launcher advises me that my copy is up to date.
