Is Firefox 2.0 Portable really finished yet?

Submitted by Greg on December 8, 2006 - 7:36pm

I just downloaded and installed Firefox 2.0 Portable onto my USB flash drive as it is only now offered on portableapps.com. It seemed to work great. However, I noticed when I browsed any web site, the links would remain blue after I clicked the link and returned. I checked the Tools/Options/Contents/Colors and everything was checked the same as my desktop versions of Firefox. The links are supposed to turn purple after you visit them. The desktop version works as it is supposed to. The portable version doesn't seem to. Is this just one bug of the Portable version? How am I supposed to be sure that all the behind security measures are working properly? Should I delete 2.0 and go back to 1.5.0.8?

Firefox Portable Cannot find my profile if it is moved to new location

Submitted by johndoe2k4 on December 8, 2006 - 6:24pm

I am running FF portable 2.0 on my usb memory stick.

FF Portable is installed on: \PortableApps\Internet\Portable Firefox 2.0 Final\ and when my profile is in \PortableApps\Internet\Portable Firefox 2.0 Final\Data everything works great.

I tried to move my firefox profile to a different location and changed the variable LastProfileDirectory in FirefoxPortableSettings.ini to the new path but when I start FF it creates a new profile instead of using mine and writes a new LastProfileDirectory with the new profile directory . I found one method that works but is unstable.

Instead of executing PortableFirefox.exe I did \PortableApps\Internet\Portable Firefox 2.0 Final\apps\firefox\firefox.exe -profile y:\path-to-my-profile and it did load my profile but none of my extensions worked any more and when I try to go to the options for any one of my extensions, the Add-Ons window freezes up and I have to manually kill firefox.exe. AS soon as I copy the profile to the original location (\PortableApps\Internet\Portable Firefox 2.0 Final\Data) everything works great.

saving form information

Is there a way I can get Firefox Portable 2.0 to save form information? I would like to have it remember my 12 digit library card number so I don't have to dig out my card every time I want to check my holds.

Sorry if this is a commonly asked question - I swear I looked!

All my bookmarks have disappeared

Submitted by Zino on December 8, 2006 - 11:02am

Hi,i opened up firefox portable(1.5.0.8)and it opened up three tabs for various extensions as if had updated them, which i hadn't.I clicked on 'home' and the default homepage appeared, as in google. My homepage is yahoo so i was a little surprised

All my bookmarks have disappeared too, there's no sign of them.Is there some way of retrieving them?Where the heck did they go!!?

Is it possible i've been hacked?I've read that if your homepage is changed then it means you've been hacked. My connection is routed through a hardware firewall router which i was told was secure.I also ran tests, such as 'pinging' my connection and i was invisible according to the results.

according to this post https://portableapps.com/node/2990
my userChrome.css shoul be @
Firefox (portable)\Data\profile\chrome\userChrome.css
But in this directory
D:\progs\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\Data\profile\chrome\
I only have
userChrome-example.css
&
userContent-example.css
What am i doing worng. My goal is to modify the GMarks extension to
#GM-star { list-style-image: url("chrome://gmarks/skin/star.gif") !important; }
(makes the blue star for this plugin become the normal bookmark star)

I really have no idea what I'm doing. It would be nice to have a file structure walkt

FirefoxPortableSettings.ini modified every time?

Submitted by dlkj on December 6, 2006 - 11:32pm

I noticed that the FirefoxPortableSettings.ini seems to have the date modified changed every time I launch FirefoxPortable.
Is this correct? Does the launcher write every time?
Does this reduce the life of the flash drive?
Can this be done in such a way as to modify only if the content has changed?
Are there any other files affected in the same manner?

Sorry for so many questions but I had a lot of doubts and wanted to be as clear as possible.

Making firefox look like IE - Need mirror for files

Submitted by StephenQ on December 6, 2006 - 7:20pm

Hello,
I have upgraded to portable firefox 2, and John's page on his personal site which instructs how to make firefox look like IE links to a lot of Bamm's work, and the site has been down, for months.
I cant find any mirror at all for the files, so i cannot install them.
Does anyone have a copy of the extensions discussed on this page?

Thanks.

surfing software

Submitted by valleygreen on December 6, 2006 - 2:55am

My IT department has installed what they call "surfing software". they claim this allows them to monitor where we go on the internet. If I'm using portable firefox running on a flash drive can the software detect that?
