Firefox Portable

Firefox very slow and sometimes unresponsive - any ideas?

Submitted by mudroads on November 23, 2006 - 1:10am

I am using Firefox portable from a USB drive in internet cafes in Thailand. The drive is USB 2, but most of the computers are the slower USB 1.

I find that Firefox is very slow to load (approx 2 minutes) and sometimes slow to respond (perhaps when it is loading a page) - I just have to wait for it to finish whatever it was doing and the hourglass goes away before I can e.g navigate in the bookmark menu. Also if I delete or add a bookmark, this takes perhaps more than half a minute before I can do anything else. When closing Firefox, the application disappears immediately, but firefox.exe persists in the processes for some time.

Open Recently Closed Tabs? Where is it in Firefox 2

Submitted by mikecorry on November 22, 2006 - 10:24am

My option to re-open recently closed tabs is missing in my new FF2.o install.

What gives? Please forgive my lack of decorum but I'm new to the forum.

It's just not there - File, Edit, View, Bookmarks, Tools, Help

Run locally

Submitted by celtickuja on November 22, 2006 - 10:20am

I just learned about the RunLocally entry in FirefoxPortable.ini, and I gotta say, I love it for using on my work computer, as it only has USB1.1 and running an app off that is miserably slow. However, I'd like an option on the Suite's launcher to run locally or run from USB. I don't want to have to modify that ini file everytime I go anywhere else (running from USB is preferred under other environments both for security and because I play with installing and removing extensions quite often). Other than that, I must say I've converted from a pretty hardcore U3 fan to using your launcher almost exclusively. I only keep U3 on my drive for the few U3 specific programs I have (QuickPhrase, Winamp, and Foxit Reader).

Downloading Bug

Submitted by Matrixboy on November 22, 2006 - 9:33am

I am not sure the version number... but the version that I had found in the Suite seems to have problems downloading plugins, stuff from here, ANYTHING.

It works at times, and others it does not.

Must Reboot After First Run

Submitted by Frank D. Hubeny on November 22, 2006 - 8:37am

Hello Group;

I can duplicate this error all of the time. When I run FireFox 2 portable for the first time. I have to reboot my PC or I can not run this application a second time. I get the following error message. "portableapps multiple instance is running pleas shut down prior to restarting.

After the reboot the application runs fine each time I exit it.

I all so can not delete the directory prior to rebooting. I get the following error message. "Can not delete JAR50.dll: access is denied.

During restarting my PC, I also get this error. "XPCOM:E...WILL NOT RESPOND".

I am running this application on a PC running Windows 2000 Pro with service pack 4. A possible side not is that I do not get this message from a installed version of Mozilla Firefox two, or from the firefox portable version 1.5.0.7 that was installed on the same PC, OS that is runn for the first time.

Bookmarks toolbar and Accepting ULA

Submitted by Freeballer on November 21, 2006 - 7:10pm

I just downloaded portable firefox 2,
I just copied my prefs.js to apps\defaultdata\profile and my other settings have saved (etc. always show tab bar) but the bookmark toolbar is still enabled and I want to get rid of it permanently. I also copied all other files into same directory and it still shows that bleeping toolbar.
Slso stop asking for accepting the ula if possible.

Help! Download Manager Doesn't Work At All!

Submitted by ngocdt on November 21, 2006 - 5:44pm

Okay. So it doesn't crash anything. But it doesn't do anything either. If I click save image somewhere, it will download, but nothing happens in the manager. No status bar, no "open file button" or anything!

Someone did suggest changing the "save download file to:" folder... but that didn't help either. In fact, I tried to specify a folder to download in, but if I try to download another image, it will still ask me where to save it!

What's going on and how do I fix it?

Migrating from PStart to Portable Apps Suite

Submitted by PollieXmas on November 21, 2006 - 3:32pm

Hi All,

I'd like to clean up all my portable apps to ensure that there are no redundant files and that the profile structure is correct.

As I see it I have two options.

1) Export the profile extention data out of FF in use and import it into the (blank) FF in the portable app suite.

2) Overwrite the (new/blank) data FF directory in the portable apps suite with the data directory currently in use.

I'd prefer to start on a clean sheets with all my portable apps, i.e. use the executables as shipped in the suite rather than copy the old/upgraded apps currently in use into the new suite.

shockwave install instructions don't work

Submitted by squeezebox on November 21, 2006 - 3:21pm

I followed the instructions here, which state

#1 Download the free Shockwave Player from the Macromedia website

#2 Run the installation routine and, instead of letting it install to a local browser, select to choose your browser

Trouble is, when I installed shockwave, it never offers this option. The only input it allows the user is whether to install google toolbar. After it's finished installing, my IE pops up automatically, I have no control over it. I never get the option to install to, or use, FFportable at any time.
