Firefox Portable

Share One Firefox on win7 and Mac OS X Lion

Submitted by marcinternational on July 12, 2012 - 10:23am

Hi.

I frequently need to switch between my work place's windows 7 and home's mac book pro. I would love to be able to continue my browsing etc. I am not concern about bookmark. Rather I need to continue the browsing tabs that I left open when I was at work so I could continue at home on my mac. (Yes. I do market research and have lots of tabs open) I use firefox portable with my flash drive. So, how do I make sure both MAC and Win firefox portable use the same info so I could continue where I left off?

Thanks.
Marc

[Fixed] Mozilla Apps Leave Empty Directory Behind

John T. Haller's picture

Firefox Portable 13.0.1, Thunderbird Portable 13.0.1 and SeaMonkey Portable 2.10.1 leave behind an empty folder within $LOCALAPPDATA of Mozilla\Firefox, Thunderbird and Mozilla\SeaMonkey respectively. This is a result of a newer version of the underlying engine so the Firefox and Thunderbird 10 ESR releases are unaffected.

Is it safe to restart?

Submitted by Kermode on July 8, 2012 - 5:29pm

if you change themes or addon extensions the program tells you it needs to be restarted. Is it safe just to say yes to this instead of stopping and restarting the program?

My worry would be that instead of restarting the portable program it would just start the normal program instead.

VLC Plugin for Firefox Portable

Submitted by Samuel Elstein on July 4, 2012 - 12:53pm

Hi I would like to request portabalizing the settings for the VLC Plugin. I have found a way to make the plugin work portably but it leaves information behind. I am no programmer but I do know that thie method below works.

Here is How I got it to work:

VLC 2.0 can be done, prior versions no
You will however need to copy the folders from vlc to X:/PortableApps/FirefoxPortable/data/plugins:

osdmenu
plugins

and the files:

vlc.exe
vlc.exe.manifest
vlc-cache-gen.exe
npvlc.dll.manifest
npvlc.dll
libvlccore.dll
libvlc.dll

Can't get Firefox Sync to work

Submitted by irishtexmex on June 30, 2012 - 6:00pm

I get an error in the bottom that pops up (in the same place as the Add-on Toolbar) that says:

"Sync has not been able to complete during the last 7 days. Please check your network settings."

Is there any fix to this? I'm running Firefox Portable 13.0.1 and my Portable Apps client is up to date as well. I believe that Firefox Sync worked in previous versions which is why I have it enabled now.

FF portable impossible to update plugins

Submitted by Hansj on June 21, 2012 - 6:00am

I don't know what's going on.

In the portable apps folder with firefox there are actually 2 folders with a plugins_readme file that says "Put your plugins here". One is in data/plugins and the other is in app/defaultdata/plugins

So I started to move 2 files to data/plugins to get the flash player working. And I guess it made it work.

And when I browsed google earth it also required a plugin, and on the C drive in the installed firefox there I found the plugin and move it, so that also worked.

There were lots of other plugins and so I moved them too.

Parts of FF Portable Compromised by *Something*

I'm still running FF 12 Portable, and all was still going fine until I booted up this morning. Certain select but important items just seem to be gone:

All Cookies
The Cache.
All History from just the last few days -- older History still there.
(However, Saved Passwords were untouched.)
Javascript functionality appears to be gone.
