Windows 98SE Problem

Submitted by BenB on February 13, 2008 - 9:59am

Hi. I’m having a problem installing OpenOffice Writer for use on my old Windows 98SE computer at home. It works great on my office Windows XP machine. Specifically, the menu bar (“File, Edit, View,” etc.) does not appear at all on the Windows 98SE display. From what I’ve read I suspect that I haven’t handled Java correctly, and I don’t know how to do it. Java 1.5 is installed on the local machine. Using the Java Portablizer 1.1 I imported the Java files to the JavaPortablizer folder which was automatically created on the portable device.

Unable to startup

Submitted by denizen on February 2, 2008 - 11:19pm

I have the latest OpenOffice Portable version installed on my USB Flashdisk as per its default settings.

Actually, this is my second installation after having discovered the perils of using NTFS as Filesystem for a USB Flash Drive. It is now formatted as FAT32 with all the applications reinstalled via Portable installers (*.paf).

My initial install on NTFS worked like a charm, unfortunately it isn't the same now. The problem is everytime I run OO the application returns an error saying "Unable to start application. Unable to set language for interface."

Information: Adding JRE in 2.3.1, Vista Home Premium

Submitted by foxcole on January 31, 2008 - 10:27pm

I recently had to replace my personal laptop and ended up with a Vista Home Premium machine (not by preference!).

Running OOo from my USB key on this machine, I had to select the JRE as usual**, but something was odd: the "use a java runtime environment" checkbox was not checked (it usually is) and no JREs popped up in the list, not even after several minutes (the list can take a while to populate while the computer is being searched for Java installations).

Word 2003 templates

Submitted by MartynB on January 31, 2008 - 6:17am

I successfully created a document in Writer by opening a Word template in writer, writing the document, saving the result as an OO Writer xml document, previewing the document and printing it as a PDF. I'm using OO writer 2.3.1.

The problem arises when I them open the document once again. The template information is gone and the layout of the document is garbaged and it is not garbaged consistently. Three creations of the document resulted in three differently garbaged documents when reopened.

OOorg 2.3.1 and jre 1.6.0_03

Hello

My portable openoffice can't find java - I tried both locations (G:\2_Programy\CommonFiles\Java and G:\2_Programy\OpenOfficePortable\App\Java) - in those folders I have bin and lib folders that I took from jre1.6.0_03 directory on my friend's computer.

My javaportable.ini:
[JavaPortable]
Vendor=Sun Microsystems Inc.
Version=1.6.0_03
URL=http://java.sun.com/

Update wrong - ohhh so wrong

I downloaded the "Standard" from https://portableapps.com/suite
I launched "Writer Portable", clicked on Help, and was disappointed to find version 2.0.4 Copyright 2000-2006 - I thought I had been promised 2.3.1

I clicked on Help > Check for Updates and was given
OOo_2.3.1_Win32Intel_install_wJRE_en-US.exe 125,892,318
Incase it did not know where to find my portableapps, I moved it from my download folder to the root of the external drive H:\ in which the portableapps was already installed.

I double clicked. It seemed to know what it was doing. So very deceptive

Broken Tar in Open Office, Will it Work ? BIG delay to Antivirus.

Submitted by Alan_B on January 15, 2008 - 3:28pm

I downloaded 2.3.1 Rv 2 from default Amsterdam Mirror
After 100% download completion, NOD32 Version 2.7 took 20 Minutes to scan before it allowed me to touch it.
A subsequent scan (launched via context menu) took 997 Seconds, and log includes
OpenOffice_Portable_2.3.1_Rev_2_en-us.paf.exe »NSIS »testtar.tar »TAR - archive damaged.

I downloaded from Kent (UK) Mirror with the same delays and complaints.
Binary comparison by AptDiff found no differences between the two downloads.
