Speed of PortApps?

Submitted by BlackFlag on May 22, 2008 - 8:29am

Hi.. I'm pretty new here.. and I checked whole forum, dl the apps put them on my brand new usb flesh pocket thingy and get dissapointed by speed... I have no idea why but all apps are slow as hell (on the other side from pc itself it's fast as hell but who cares about pc).. they are simply useless.. all of them.. I wait like 20-25s to FF just to load, 10sec to check email in TB, I'm not mentioning OOO, etc. etc... So.. Is my USB flesh shitty? Is USB 2.0 shitty? Am I shitty? Are all portApps shitty? What's wrong with it? The whole idea of portable life don't work... what to do?

(There was a similar discussion last year https://portableapps.com/node/5069)

Now the 1.1 is the official version, what do you think is coming next?
Yes, I know, the PA Platform 1.5. Wink
But whats happening next year, in 2 or 3 years?
I think there won't be an PAM OS ever, so it useless to discuss, but what could be happend? Is PA still alive in 3 years?
What's coming up? My prognosis:
1 Years: 1st ports to Mobile Phones.
1-2 Years: The Platform supports widgets.
2 Years: The Platform becomes to a desktop.

How to modify Apps name in the launcher ?

Submitted by Weetabix on May 21, 2008 - 11:37am

Hi there

Does anyone knows how to modify the default name of an application ?
What i want to do is to change "Mozilla Thunderbird, Portable Edition" into something shorter.

Screenshot

I tried to modify the "Name" value located into the [Details] section of \\PortableApps\ThunderbirdPortable\App\AppInfo\appinfo.ini but without any result...

Can this be done ?
Thanx

PNotes Suite Inclusion, Windows 9x Support, Etc - Quick Question, ASAP

John T. Haller's picture
Submitted by John T. Haller on May 20, 2008 - 9:34pm

I'm packaging the Suite 1.1 and have hit a block. PNotes, which used to work with Windows 9x no longer does. It looks like it's due to use of advanced window features (like transparency). Right now, everything else in the Suite works on Windows 98 and above (most Windows 95). We'll be dropping that requirement in the next Suite because it will have Firefox 3 (and eventually Thunderbird 3) which only support Windows 2000 and up.

So, I'm thinking of pulling PNotes from the Suite for now. Any thoughts?

SpamSpan Module

Okay, I'm pretty new to Drupal, not sure if this'll work, but I was browsing modules and found the SpamSpan module.
According to the page, it obfuscates email addresses to help prevent spambots from collecting them.
This would give the mods one less task to take care of

It's time once again for another fun and exciting PortableApps.com Update. Please turn off all cell phones and pagers until the end so as not to disturb your neighbors. Anyone using theirs is fair game to have popcorn thrown at them. Now grab your popcorn and beverage of choice and lets dig in.

Drupal 6 Upgrade - DONE!

Internet Explorer Portable.

Submitted by Yroark on May 20, 2008 - 12:35pm

Just for laughs I copied my Internet Explorer folder from my programs folder to my portable apps drive. It ran fine on the three machines I tested. Granted those three machines were all either Windows XP or Vista and had the same version of IE installed.

I realize that IE isn't open source but I thought it was worth mentioning for those of us that use Internet Explorer and not Firefox.

Version Control System

Submitted by JPedrosa on May 20, 2008 - 9:32am

Hi there.

i use apps from PortableApps.com for a long time now.
and i find myself, monthly or something close to that, looking for all the apps to check out new versions of it.

this is not easy (well it's not too complex either, but could be better)

so here is what i was thinking.

during the unzip of the app, you maybe could write somewhere the version of the app (ex: Pidgin\2.4.1.ver)

then the StartPortableApps.exe could read this on the start up, and check on the website for new versions.

is this too far complex than it seems?
just does not make sense?

Other questions about Spyware in Usb Drive

Submitted by clemente21 on May 20, 2008 - 12:29am

Hi there, sorry to ask about simple same issue in new thread, but I have other problem. I picked each pictures of usb drives and delivery to new file in PC and i cleaned up my usb driver. I scanned my college virus called "Symantec Anti-virus" on the usb drive. nothing infected like spy ware or virus but there is one file and other program that i can't delete. I deleted both and it came back again. It's a folder "Recycler" and other "autorun.inf"

What is this for? The folders are hidden..I never seen it before.
