Firefox, Thunderbird and OpenOffice.org for U3 by PortableApps.com

Mozilla Thunderbird for U3

Submitted by colsmi on October 18, 2007 - 3:34am

I downloaded the Thunderbird for U3 to my USB U3 stick. When trying to open I get a message "Thunderbird for U3 cannot be started. You may wish to reinstall to fix this issue. (ERROR: The program could not be found:\thunderbird\thunderbird.exe." I have uninstalled and reinstalled 3 times with the same result.

Replace U3 with PortableApps including the launhcer

Submitted by ipartola on October 3, 2007 - 10:29am

I've been using a U3 drive for a while and PortableApps for even longer. What I'd like to do is this:

* remove U3 completely
* install a new ISO on the U3 launch drive that would launch the PortableApps launcher from the main portion of the drive
* enjoy it: whenever I plug in my thumb drive on any Windows machine it launches the PortableApps launcher automatically, despite the fact that the drive letters change from machine to machine

Is this possible? If so, how would one go about doing this?

Thanks in advance.

Microsoft Remote Destop ActiveX Control

Submitted by DavidBock on September 17, 2007 - 2:33pm

All:

I love the Memorex/U3 USB stick with embedded Firefox 2.0.0.6. I have a serious need to use Firefox on the USB stick or from a regular desktop browser to access information on a remote server running Microsoft Small Business Server R2.

I need to have the following ActiveX control (or emulator) for Firefox on the desktop or on the USB stick to access the remote server. When I try to access the remote server using Firefox I get the following message:

Security, security, security

Hi all,

I've been extremely happy with PortApps. A couple days ago I bought a 4 GB SanDisk as a backup and that was my (accidental) introduction to U3! I'm running both PortApps and U3 on the drive now.

I like the U3 autorun feature. But my main interest with flash drives is Security. From what I've read, U3's password protection is not really protection at all. I need a drive that I don't lose sleep over in case it gets lost or stolen. The apps are replaceable, but the data isn't.

Thunderbird U3 won't run under Vista - Anyone know how to get this to work?

Submitted by cjuzda on August 21, 2007 - 8:13am

I downloaded Thunderbird U3 and it runs fine on my XP machine. When I try to run it on a Vista machine, after asking for permission twice I get an error message saying it cant find the exe. This is a serious problem for me. The other more stupid (on my part) thing is that I set up TB to handle all my mail but made the dumb mistake of moving all my yahoo and gmail to the usb with Thunderbird and the originals were deleted. Is there a quick way of getting these back into Yahoo or Gmail (I doubt it).

U3 Launcher disconnects all flash drives including it self...

Submitted by Bensawsome on August 21, 2007 - 1:04am

I am pretty sure this has been mentioned before and I searched for about an hour but with no luck. Sad So here it goes.
When I plug in my cruzer u3 drive and I have other usb drives plugged in it just disconnects all the other drives including itself! It comes up with the drive not removed correctly once for each usb drive that was plugged in. It works fine when the U3 Launcher isn't on... >:( It is really starting to annoy me since I have about 5 different flash drives.

Bypass U3 security - reboot

Submitted by 4wdturbo on August 20, 2007 - 6:03am

If I boot up my computer with my SanDisk U3 cruzer already connected to the computer, it will not prompt me for my password. What it will do however, is give me full access to all my files stored on the device!

Response from SanDisk - "We do not recommend connecting the Cruzer before you boot your computer."

Great! So if my U3 USB card ever ends up in someone elses hands, I'm supposed to hope that they follow SanDisk's recommendation, and my files will remain secure???

Has anyone else come across this problem?

U3 Apps. Future

Submitted by FlashGordon on July 22, 2007 - 10:45am

Will you be doing the latest version of Firefox as a U3 application?

What other U3 applications are you planning to provide and when?

Seems to be mixed views about the future of the U3 platform. Anyone got any real ¨insider knowledge¨ of what the future is for U3?

Another instance of OO is already running. OO won't open

Submitted by ss400P0rt on July 9, 2007 - 7:03pm

When I try to open OpenOffice.org portable from my thumbdrive I get the message: "Another instance of OpenOffice.org is already running. Please close other instance of OpenOffice.org before launching OpenOffice.org for U3"

Well, I am in Chicago for the next three weeks and home is Arizona. I have also used it in California several weeks ago. How can I get this corrected?

I have removed OpenOffice portable from the thumbdrive and re-installed, but I get the same message.
