Password protect a USB drive with NO admin access?

Submitted by minicl55 on November 28, 2012 - 9:18pm

I'm trying to have an encrypted USB for my files at both work and school. I don't have any UAC access, but I do have everything else, cmd, viewing the registry, etc.

Is there any program that does not require to be installed to the host machine and doesn't require admin access? TrueCrypt needs admin access in order to run in portable mode, so that won't work.

HELP! How can I make this non-PAF app show up in the launcher?

Submitted by GameMakerFan on November 28, 2012 - 8:01pm

Hey, I just tried installing Maxthon, but the PAF version was down, so I got the one from their site. But the EXE's in a different location; the main folder has another set of folders inside it, and the EXE is located in one of those subfolders. Can I get an app that's laid out like to show up in the launcher menu? Thanks!

Portable Java Possible to Crash Computer?

Submitted by trust on November 28, 2012 - 9:24am

I have no regular Java installed on the Windows system.

But strangely I can still bulk upload files to Box.com via it's Java bulk uploader. I don't have to start anything. So the Portable Java works automatically with Portable Iron without starting anything?

The main problem is it crashed my PC! It reboots from the Java multi-uploader all the time.

get the File-properties "Version" Tab back for Windows 7 (handy for downloading PA 'online' installers)

Submitted by Grantwhy on November 25, 2012 - 9:32pm

so, I finally get around to buying a Window 7 laptop (still use my ond XP desktop as my main computer),

and I see that yes, when you right click on a file the Version tab is gone.

This is annoying because with Portable Apps that use an online installer (eg: Google Chrome Portable), by downloading the online.paf.exe and right clicking it (in XP) I can get the info to download the chrome_installer.exe, which when placed in the same folder as the online.paf.exe will allow for a 'offline' install Smile

How to Make Windows Autorun USB Flash Drives

Submitted by Grantwhy on November 25, 2012 - 9:01pm

It is probably a (very) bad idea to re-allow devices to autorun (especially on work computers), it was disabled for a reason.

But for those who want to do so I saw an interesting story on raymond.cc

The first of the two programs looks promising.

PAF format page

I just noticed one item needing to be updated on the PAF format page: EULA.txt should now be located in App\Appinfo, as opposed to Other\Source.

I don't remember when that change came in, a couple PAI versions ago, I think.

suggestion for optimizing system integration

Submitted by userman on November 23, 2012 - 12:23pm

hello!

while portable app concept is very handy, we often need to somehow integrate our portable app in our system, for example, i want to set my system to handle by default zip files with my portable zip app

so, along with each portable app, i suggest that there should be a script that will perform such useful system integration actions, and ofcourse not the other useless system integration that the normal app would do to the system (eg. create files and folders in a folder outside its own, change system files, write useless registry entries, etc)

thanks!
