Browser-dependent download installation failure

Submitted by squarepegger on December 10, 2011 - 9:13am

Well, I thought I'd report this weirdness.

I downloaded and installed PortableApps.com Platform 10.0 plus 5 portable apps with no problems using Firefox+FlashGot+Free Download Manager.

The next day I downloaded 2 more apps using Chromium (not Chrome) + Free Download Manager. Those two apps would not install. I got the "The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction" error each time.

I wiped the USB flash drive and tried again. PortableApps Platform installed OK but not the last two apps (which I tried first).

Updater Downloaded Files Location

Submitted by pcmedic on December 9, 2011 - 5:17pm

Is there a way, or is it coming, to change the location where application updates are downloaded to? I would like to be able to define the location I want so as to keep copies of the installer programs for each app.

Let's say I could define my updates download location to I:\PortableAppsSuite\PortableApps\PortableApps.com then when I run updates the files would get downloaded here run/installed and the installer would be left in the directory it was downloaded to.

Suggestion - Web Proxy Support for App Store and Updates

Submitted by scrass571 on December 9, 2011 - 4:33pm

One of the reasons I use Portableapps at work is to bypass the typical limitations imposed on me by my company (Web filtering, no administrator rights, etc.). I just installed upgraded to Portableapps 10.0 platform and my company's web filter is blocking Portableapps from getting to the server to check for updates and get new apps.

I would like to see the platform support web proxies (like Firefox does). Firefox is the primary browser I use for internet access.

I truly LOVE the new platform. Good job, guys!

[Fixed] Documents, PortableApps folders and sub-folders invisible to PocketSearch and other apps

Submitted by dodi on December 9, 2011 - 4:16pm

The PortableApps Platform gives the folders Documents and PortableApps special qualities that make them differ from any other folder you create yourself on a flash drive. These special qualities can cause problems for other portable programs, e.g. PocketSearch (see my post https://portableapps.com/node/29630), which is a handy program to index and search the content of your flash drive. The folders Documents and PortableApps are invisible for PocketSearch.

Change location of preset folders (Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos)

Submitted by dodi on December 9, 2011 - 2:28pm

If I move the folders Music, Pictures, Videos out of the folder Documents so that they are at the same level as Documents, I cannot open these folders any more in the PortableApps start menu when I click on the folder symbols for Music, Pictures, Videos on the right side.
Could you please add a function that allows to show the start menu where these folders were moved?

Accessibility Issues Using Screen Readers

Submitted by Hari.D on December 9, 2011 - 1:57pm

The latest release of PortableApps platform interface/menu still is inaccessible to a screen reader. I am using NVDA and System Access respectively. I thought that the latest release would be a screen-reader-friendly; however, I do not find it so in my experience. I sincerely hope it will be addressed as soonest possible.

I cannot see apps in menu when portableapps starts-up

Submitted by Chaspalm on December 9, 2011 - 1:12pm

I had to install portableapps on a new flashdrive, and when it finished loading the program started up. There were no apps in the menu area.
What did I do wrong?
Also when I came to portableapps.com I did not see any options on which version I wanted, whether it being the basic or the suite.
Please advise me on what to do...
Thank you,
Charles
I really do like the older portableapps program. It has saved my bacon in the past; I hope the new version will be albe to also. Ha!
