Suggestion: Magnet-URI's on portableapps.com enabling the platform itself to perform the downloading

Submitted by michaelb16561 on January 8, 2012 - 9:03pm

G'day,

It would be handy if users could have the flexibility of browsing the portableapps.com website with the convenience and ease of use of having the portable apps platform perform the downloading/installing.

A possible way to achieve this could be the use of Magnet URI links on the download page of applications on the website specifically for users wishing to download and install an application with the platform.

Clicking the magnet link would instruct the web browser to open the requested link with the portable apps platform which would perform the downloading/installation.

i dont know how the customized theming situation is coming along but i have an idea that will make it easier for users that would like to use custom menu buttons in PAM.

In the PATheme.ini settings file there can be an [Menu Buttons] feature added that can be used to locate the users specified button image location.
for example:

[ThemeDetails]
Name=PortableApps.com Classic Light
Version=2.0
Author=PortableApps.com
URL=https://portableapps.com/

[MenuIcons]
OptionsButton=X:\PortableApps\PortableApps.com\App\Graphics\MenuIcons\options_CL.png

I just installed Portable Apps 10.0.1.0 It installed the "Start" button in the root, then a folder called PortableApps, then within that another folder called portableapps.com then within THAT folders caled Apps, Data,and Other. When I click on Start, the platform comes up, and i working, except there are NO apps listed! All the controls on he platform window work, I just have no apps. And within the Apps folder, the only app folder s 7-zip. I've deleted and reinstalled twice with the same result.

Suggestion: Link App Directory Entry to programs's webpage?

Submitted by JarC on January 4, 2012 - 8:17am

Not sure if the location/path to program's own webpages here on PortableApps are static enough to make this possible. But would be nice if the entries in the App Directory dialog could link to the corresponding portableapps.com pages if you want to know more about a program before downloading it.

recognizing/indicating 64bit vs 32bit apps

Submitted by JarC on January 4, 2012 - 7:40am

Was hoping the new platform would be offering a solution for this (haven't followed the beta and been using a different menu MOD upto now)

What I think is still the biggest PITA is that there's no access to the actual file properties of the programs listed on the menu.

This originates from the fact that program names never indicate whether it is the 32bit or the 64bit version of the same program if it comes with both.
