Erase all personal data, keep apps?

Submitted by Moonbase on October 8, 2010 - 6:04am

Just to be sure, let me ask this question:

Assuming that one works in adult education and hands out USB sticks to the course participants containing (only) a predefined set of original Portable Apps (unmodified/unrun) plus some course materials in the "Documents" folder.

After the course is finished, the sticks have to be "reset" to a clean state for the next course (sticks are lent to participants for the course duration).

Would it be enough to …

  • clean out the "Documents" folder (keeping empty "Music", "Pictures" and "Videos" subdirectories),

PA 1.6.1 - Does NOT work properly when running under write-protected media!

Hi all,

I am running PA 1.6.1 from my flash drive which has write protect switch. When I try to eject the flash drive using the eject button in the PA menu, it gives me a error:

Unable to write to K:\Portableapps\PortableApps.com\Data\PortableAppsMenu.ini.

32GB micro SD card - after a few runs everything is corrupted, files missing, StartPortableApps crashes

Submitted by antiduplicity on October 1, 2010 - 2:06am

I do not know if this is an issue with my card, with windows 7 x64 or what. If I install the full suite, nothing will run after it is done installing. Windows reports that StartPortableApps.exe is not a valid win32 or win64 file. I look in several of the subdirectories and they are empty. I notice that the PortableApps directory and the documents directory are both set to System and Hidden, and I do not know if that is normal operation. I will be traying the latest beta to see if that is different.

Anyone else have issues with a 32GB micro SD in a USB sleeve?

More than one [DownloadFiles], please?!

Submitted by Moonbase on September 27, 2010 - 9:07pm

I was just trying to build an up-to-date portable ImgBurn with full language support (1 main download, 36 [!] separate language files) and found that the PA.c Installer will only allow one download.

For such cases, it would be extremely nice if we could have more than one download (and more than 10, if anyhow possible). ImgBurn’s language files aren’t delivered with the main application but instead in lots of separate (few-hundred-byte) ZIP files.

Updating Apps: There *Must* be a Better Way ...

Submitted by jwesleycooper on September 25, 2010 - 9:58pm

I have a suggestion that would seriously benefit the Portable Apps Platform ... why do we have to manually download a whole new installer every time we update our apps? Why can't the platform have an "Auto-update option? Perhaps a nice little menu with checkboxes so users and select what they do or don't want to update at the time ... possibly even a "roll-back" feature, like Windows has for it's drivers.

But of course, that's just what I think about it ... what do the rest of you think: is it a good idea?

Backup slow and fails if TEMP drive nearly full

Submitted by Moonbase on September 25, 2010 - 1:02pm

On the laptop I’m writing from I use a 20 GB C: drive plus a 40 GB D: drive. Drive C: is almost full (i.e., about 2 GB free) whilst drive D: has about 15 GB free.

Windows’ %TEMP% variable points to

C:\DOKUME~1\username\LOKALE~1\Temp

which is the 8-character name for

C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\username\Lokale Einstellungen\Temp

Symptom "Backup is SLOW":

Some apps not updating - 2.0 Beta 5

Submitted by dougakins on September 17, 2010 - 8:49am

When using the new App Updater, some of the apps are not updating correctly. This morning an update was available for Thunderbird and PNotes. Thunderbird updated correctly, but PNotes did not.

When I try to update it, it tries download it a couple of time and then puts up the error "The downloaded copy of PNotes Portable is not valid and can not be installed. This could be due to an incomplete download or other network issue. Please try running the updater again when complete."

PortableApps Updater keeps picking up AppCompactor even though it's already fully updated

My AppCompactor installation is fully updated - it's at version 2.0.1 - but the PortableApps Updater keeps saying it needs another update. I even tried letting the Updater "update" it, then I re-ran the Updater 5 minutes later and it said AppCompactor needed another update.
I'm guessing something isn't quite right either in the updates database or in the way AppCompactor is reporting its version.

Thanks!

StartPortableApps.exe is not quite fully portable, it relies on presence and relative position of "PortableApps" directory.

Submitted by Jestre on September 15, 2010 - 1:29pm

I believe this is true as I have not been able to find out how change the directory name and still use the start exe.
To clarify StartPortableApps.exe can be moved anywhere as long as a directory called "PortableApps" exists in the same directory with the Portable apps menu located inside.
The Portability issue is that you can't use it to point to any other directory other than "PortableApps" and it must be in the same relative location.
All the other apps support changing directory names (including "PortableApps"), usually for program as well as data/profile locations.
