PortableApps.com Platform

PortableApps.com Menu, Backup and Platform/Suite installer.

What does the menu do, other than the obvious ?

Submitted by HarryR on June 25, 2010 - 3:58am

Actually, that's a pretty dumb title ...

What I mean is that I mostly work in a very document-oriented way, and I rarely launch apps directly. Hence, I am usually using a file manager as my interface, and almost never an app menu.

So, does the PortableApps menu do anything other than launching the relevant apps, like adjusting paths or environment variables, or cleaning up the registry, or something ?
If I don't use the PortableApps menu at all, do I lose anything in terms of portability ?

Quick newbie info needed for non=(nada) user

Hi all-Bear with me. I know next to nothing about computers, but am attracted to lite OPEN SOURCE concept. I just installed PA on my netbook to see if they will speed things up. Windows XP would not let me create a new folder at root level. So for time being I created a desk top Portable Apps destination folder. Is this okay?

Compatibility between 2.0 Beta 4 and 2.0

Submitted by 0per4t0r on June 19, 2010 - 11:53am

I have a lot of custom .patheme files that I use, and I was wondering if they would stay compatible during the change, because 2.0 Beta 4 and 2.0 Platform should look very much the same, except for a few bugfixes.

So, will be themes work on both versions, and also, will my preferences for hidden apps, and renamed apps stay the same?

Uninstaller locking up

Submitted by d_byrnes on June 17, 2010 - 5:49pm

I may just be me, but the uninstall feature really doesn't seem to work very well. Every time I try to use it (instead of simply deleting the application folder and refreshing), it hangs up saying it's uninstalling the app and to please wait. It'll just sit there for 10-15-20 minutes until I use System Administrator to shut down PA and restart it. Is anyone else having this problem? I´m currently using 2.0 beta 4, but had this same problem with the 1.6.1 PA

autorun.inf suggestion (Action= line)

Quick question... Do you really want the autorun option to say "Start PortableApps.com" to launch the PortableApps Platform? I realize the dot-com is part of the brand, but most people see .com and think "website", and that may not be what they want. In fact, on some computers, in some situations, they may back out, very rapidly, e.g. if they're not supposed to be going on the Internet.

Possible bug in PA Installer

Submitted by beppegg on June 11, 2010 - 7:10am

Hi all,

While I was working in portabilizing GrindStone, I've found a (possible) bug in the PA Installer: Grindstone installed itself in "%PROGRAMFILES%/Grindstone 2", and register its path in "HKLM\Software\Grindstone 2" (with spaces in the name). I've tried to use the option [CopyLocalFiles] section as following:

[CopyLocalFiles]
CopyLocalFiles=false
CopyFromRegPath=HKLM\Software\Grindstone 2
CopyFromRegKey=Install_Dir
CopyFromRegRemoveDirectories=0
CopyFromDirectory=%PROGRAMFILES%\GrindStone 2
CopyToDirectory=App\GrindStone 2

Autorun issue

I know, Autorun problems are so frequently asked that it seems embarrasing to aks another, but my issue is different.

When I plug the thumbdrive in, the autorun "scan" pops up, then brings up the options for what to run. But the PAP is not one of them. The drive gets the default PA icon, but that's all. There is no option to run PAP in the right-click menu.

I'm using the 2.0 Beta 4 platform, but I don't see any difference between the Autorun.inf file it creates and older versions.

This is the content of the Autorun.inf file:
