Portable Apps Causing Problems with Antivirus/Firewall

Submitted by PhillyDee on July 28, 2008 - 11:07am

After installing PortableApps to my thumb drive and using it for the first time, my computer either stopped starting up Avast! antivirus on startup or Windows failed to recognize Avast! and Comodo firewall.

I haven't yet figured out a way to correct this problem. PortableApps is the only thing that I changed or altered in this session.

Why is it interfering with my A/V and Firewall?

Apps work independently but no Apps Icons in Menu

Submitted by suptrniq on July 27, 2008 - 5:43pm

All apps installed and working.

Installed to:

F:\Portable_Apps\PortableApps

into their own respective folders.

For example (7Zip):

F:\Portable_Apps\7-ZipPortable

I can run it just fine from that
folder but when I open the
PortableApps Menu, I see nothing
except the basic menu - no
apps icons.

The apps were installed using:

Options / Install new Apps

from within the menu system.

Anyone?

Thanx

PortableApps Application Icon Suddenly Missing

Submitted by AnimaSeverem on July 26, 2008 - 10:51pm

I can't exactly figure out why or when, but my USB drive icon, which used to be the PortableApps platform icon, suddenly disappeared. My Autorun value is

icon=StartPortableApps.exe

StartPortableApps.exe looks fine until I right-click and go to Properties. The icon is not shown and I only get a Windows Vista dummy icon (a page with a window on it)

I'm running Windows Vista. Everything else with PortableApps works fine, but my icons are missing.

Missing menu functionality

Gotta say that I love the Portable Apps Suite! But for some reason, some basic functionalities are missing on my installation (USB thumb drive, XP Home):

Cannot move the menu location (mouse functions only on the menu items)

Cannot resize the menu (adding new apps runs off the normal display area. Cannot stretch.)

Cannot find or activate an 'Eject' button (have to close the menu prgm from Windows Task Manager in order for the drive to be "safe to remove")

Cannot rename the drive as explained in FAQ (mouse does not activate that)

Suggestions for PAM features - Quick Search

Submitted by Hichhiker on July 22, 2008 - 2:59pm

Ok, I am a relative newbie to PortableApps do forgive me if these have been covered but here are a few things I'd love to see in PAM:

I initially was going to suggest integrating Launchy (http://www.launchy.net/) but the more I think about it the more I realize it would be much more useful to integrate Launchy-like capabilities into PAM itself, so here is the wishlist:

Portable Apps Backup: suggestion for improvement

Submitted by freemp on July 19, 2008 - 6:54am

Portable App Backup automatically uses the system %TEMP% directory to create the actual backup file. This is not working very well for relatively large portable hard drives which often by far exceed (even when compressed) the maximum available disc space of the drive where the %TEMP% resides on.

Since the 7za tool has a parameter (-w) which could be used to customize the temporary working directory, I actually don't see a reason to not use this. A simple file dialog letting the user choose an arbitrary directory would do.
