Running and updating on Windows 10

Submitted by lapcat on June 2, 2016 - 5:22am

I have a problem with PortableApps updating on Windows 10.
Even if I run as administrator it is very hit-or-miss whether an app will update (mostly miss).
Also the PortableApps no longer opens a file explorer window when the USB stick is inserted.
I have to manually open a file explorer window and click start.exe to run PA launcher.
At the moment I am downloading the updates to a folder and then manually updating them.
Is this some new security trick from Microsoft?

Does the PortableApps Platform Update/App Updates Run .exe's on the Hard Drive?

Submitted by tg4423 on May 16, 2016 - 10:01am

I've searched the forum, but cannot find an answer. The reason for my question is I run the Portable Apps on my external hard drive connected to my work laptop. My employer has implemented a network security warning to the network admins if I try to run a .exe program on my laptop. And now there is a platform update, so I'm not sure whether I should run it or not.

1.) I would very much like to suggest adding incremental search to the titled alphabetized & categories Apps list when looking to install more apps.

2. ) I find performance to be dramatically improved by installing the portable apps system onto my computers' hard drive. It would be useful if PortableApps would include an easy to use sync feature.

Access violation under Windows 10

Submitted by gvjimm on May 12, 2016 - 7:01pm

Under Windows 10, I have setup to shutoff the monitor after 1 hour of inactivity. I normally leave my Thunderbird active overnight under PortableApps (and sometimes Firefox, too). I do not allow "sleep" to occur overnight. When I return to the monitor, I find a stack of error popup windows, each reporting the same following error: Access violation at address 0052CD6C 'PortableAppsPlatform.exe' read of address 00000004.

It appears as if this error is regenerated about once every 30 minutes after the screen shuts off. Is this a known problem? Any suggestions for a fix?

How to ignore app update

Submitted by cybie on May 8, 2016 - 4:04pm

Some apps are no longer supported on Windows XP, such as Filezilla and Google Chrome. All latest updates on these 2 apps can no longer run on windows XP. Is there a setting on the platform to ignore certain app update, so whatever future updates it will not auto-include or auto-check it in the checklist?

PA quit working for numerous apps - missing *Portable.ini

Submitted by rtbaileyphd on May 2, 2016 - 2:24am

I made no changes to my system, yet PA for the most part quit working. I get the popup message ...\PortableAppsPlatform\PortableApps\OperaPortable\App\Appinfo\Launcher\OperaPortable.ini is missing [Launch]:Program executable - what am I to launch?
I verified that the ini file exists and the permissions are good. It contains this:
[Launch]
ProgramExecutable=Opera\36.0.2130.65\opera.exe
WaitForEXE1=opera_crashreporter.exe
CommandLineArguments=--ran-launcher
DirectoryMoveOK=yes
SupportsUNC=yes
...
