Launching portable apps from a hard disk

Submitted by PortableJeff on August 27, 2014 - 10:12pm

Like so many others, I have installed the Suite to a hard disk partition, and run the apps from there. Today, I was making a shortcut from my desktop to one of the apps, and I found myself wondering: when launching an app from a hard disk like this, is there any advantage (stability, speed, etc.) to using the *Portable.exe rather than the actual application executable, from its own subfolder beneath the "App" subfolder?

I'm betting that it doesn't make any difference, but I'd like a definitive answer.

Thanks.

Updating Apps

Submitted by reem_151 on August 27, 2014 - 6:41am

When using my vista machine at home I do not have any problems with my portable app platform. When I use it at a library using Windows 7 I have trouble updating any of my apps. I get a message to update but on attempting the updates I get this error message "The download copy of [app name] is not valid and can not be installed. this could be due to an incomplete download or other network issue. Please try running the update again when complete". I just tried to update the portableApp.com platform on the Windows 7 machine and got the same error message.

Always when you start PortableApps 12.0.1.0 I get the following message: "Invalid image sitze". This message comes after the update from 11.2.0.0 to 12.0.1.0 and after a Reinistallation.

I use PortableApps in Windows XP and 8.1.Portable Apps 12.0.1.0 seems to be broken, Portable Apps 11.2.0.0 is top.

Auto close not working as expected?

Submitted by Rochey on August 26, 2014 - 5:11am

I'm not sure if this is a bug but I'm trying to get the Portableapps menu to close a couple of portable apps that I automatically start. The apps are "expresso" and "ditto". Every time I close the menu I'm presented with a pop up that says "please close the following apps 'expresso, ditto'". I then have to manually close the apps. Obviously this is not what I was expecting to happen I was hoping that it would close them automatically.
I'm currently running v12.0.1 and have gone through most of the betas.

PortableApps Updater

Suggestion:
Introduce cancel all button so user can cancel all updates at one shot.
if more updates were there it is difficult to cancel one by one.
Provide pause the download. user can resume later.
After selecting the updates show another confirmation screen in which order updates are downloading.
Introduce multithreaded downloads.
Integrate downloads in grid/list view in one screen, so user can see the downloads in one shot
provide more columns update list.(Example download url,if any other information availble)

future changes to portableapps platform

Submitted by portablelove on August 19, 2014 - 7:27pm

summary: about a year ago i read that this would likely be included in the next platform update. but i don't see anything about it in the current betas. a way to keep or move the temp files rather than have them all being deleted, meaning multiple downloads of hundreds of megs when not necessary, or for use on non-highspeed connections. etc.

i've searched around, and can't easily find a place where this is being discussed. i love portableapps and have been using them for years. specifically ones from portableapps.com.

Feature Request: Music Player

Many people are familiar with Rainmeter, the application which features many widgets or "skins" that appear on your desktop that you can use. Users can download additional skins from the Rainmeter website. Some of the more tech-savvy users can even program their own.

As I was listening to music with AIMP, I noticed that the bottom right section of the PortableApps.com Platform has an empty space. Then an idea grew in my mind, "why open up my music player in a new window when I can just use the platform?"
