Running in VirtualBox VM on "mapped drive"

Submitted by tschultze on July 30, 2014 - 9:19am

I hesitate to even bring this up since my use case might be totally unacceptable, but I use PortableApps from my hard drive and run instances of it two VMs where I've mapped drives (shared folders in VirtualBox parlance). I get that there are some "collisions" associated with trying to start up a specific app at the same time from the two VMs (and live with that).

Working Eject in Windows 7

Since we updated to Windows 7 at work, I can never properly eject my portable hard drive without rebooting the computer and yanking the cord at the BIOS screen. (Ever a flair for the dramatic.)

I've Googled after the issue, and going back to the early days of 7 (and possibly Vista as well) it seems the OS does a couple other things to hook into portable drives that, best I can tell, means you're not ejecting your drive cleanly without rebooting the computer or at least logging out of Windows first.

Total noob/newbie - can't even get started (jPortable loader can't be found.).

Hi,

I learnt about PortableApps today and am trying to install one particular Java app to USB.

(I m currently using an HP netbook with Windows 8.1, 64 bit)

As advised in http://josm.openstreetmap.de/wiki/USB_Stick

I went to

https://portableapps.com/download

downloaded, and ran the .exe file

A front end for portable apps appeared.

Downloaded from

https://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/java_portable_launcher

to my USB drive, double clicked on the downloaded file.

Install the same portable app many times (with update)

Hello everyone,
I discovere PortableApps Platform two days ago and is a great software.
Now my question are:

1. Is it possible with PortableApps Platform to install a Portable App (Firefox Portable for example) more than once?

2. If I have multiple installation of the same portable app (for now I've moved my fireforx portable folders in the PortablApps Platform installation directory and I can see all of them in the menu list) how can I update all of them when I perform a check for the Update in the Applications menu?

Thanks.

Portable Screensaver

Since there is a PortableApps.com Wallpaper Switcher, then theoretically,, wouldn't a PortableApps.com Screensaver Switcher be possible? Since the aforementioned Walpaper Switcher is already a feature and there is possibly a portable desktop icons feature in the future, why not complete the package with a Screensaver Switcher and have a totally customized portable desktop?

What Portable Apps Could Be.

For a number of years i used a program called Pstart. some of you may have used this program, before the portable launcher was developed. it allowed you to do some incredibly useful things.

when it was launched, you could set each program in the menu to launch also, if you desired, but also, one could launch programs when exiting the program.

when i exited the menu, i would launch a batch script that would check and make sure each and everyone of my apps were unloaded from memory, or it would alert me that they were not, and attempt to kill the programs.

startup says invalid floating pt operation, no menu display

if i install and run portableapps.com platform on an external disk (NAS, 2tb*2 raid1 mirrored) during startup it displays "invalid floating pt op" in modal dialog with OK button. the menu does not display, though hovering over taskbar icon shows menu.

when i copy that same installation (file tree) to my c: disk, it works fine. haven't tried usb flash disk yet.

since it's portable, it should run from any disk, n'est-ce pas?'t
maybe it has a problem on a disk accessed via the network?

latest 11.2 version (haven't tried beta v12).
