Toucan

many files get "error 5: Access is denied"

Submitted by spthomas on December 7, 2009 - 11:24am

I have started getting a lot of errors when I sync my thumbdrive to the harddrive. I did this for quite a while with no errors. The errors are mostly in this fomat:

"Failed to Copy File to (error 5: Access Denied)"
or
"Failed to open File (error 5: Access Denied)"

And a few other failures that don't involve Toucan.tmp but seem related.

Backup does not encrypt?

Submitted by pierlavallee on December 5, 2009 - 3:45pm

Hi,

I just installed Toucan 2 on my USB drive.

I created a backup job: Type differential, format 7-zip, compression max, password box checked.

I click RUN and enter my password (twice). The backup is performed no problem.

Then, I run 7-zip and open my archive (basefile.7z). I am able to open and view everything without being asked for the password. Not sure the backup file is even encrypted...

Is that normal?

Thanks,

Pierre

Ability to rename a job

Submitted by nqkzt057 on November 30, 2009 - 10:04pm

Hi,

Recently I use Toucan quite often and it's very inconvenient that every times I want to change the job name, I have to create a new job and re-assign all the settings. I think a button to change a job's name wouldn't be hard, and it would really help usability of Toucan. What do you think?

No scroll bars, can't interrupt preview or sync, pinned features topic

Submitted by Bob Bagwill on November 30, 2009 - 11:22am

Using 2.2.0 on Windows XP SP3, I don't always get scroll bars on the directory trees, so they run off the end of the panel.

Also, I would like to be able to interrupt long-running previews and sync's. Any action
that takes more than a few seconds should be interruptible (if at all possible) and show
progress:

Problems with Toucan Encryption using ccrypt

Submitted by toblock on November 30, 2009 - 4:25am

I have problems using the "encryption" feature which behaves like described in this topic https://portableapps.com/node/21358.

After starting the job ccrypt obviously never returns and terminating this process results in a return=1.
I've tested the encyrption with ccrypt separately and got the following result:

ccrypt -e -K pw test.txt
ccrypt: encrypt write-protected file test.txt (y or n)? y

Problems backing up Vista

Submitted by readingr on November 27, 2009 - 7:41am

I have just installed Toucan for the first time and I am having a few problems.

Every time I try to backup Vista c: I get the following errors even when Toucan is run as administrator
Cannot enumerate files in directory 'c:\Documents and Settings\' (error 5: access is denied)
Cannot enumerate files in directory 'c:\Users\' (error 5: access is denied)

I have also tried to run it as a command line job with no luck, it throws a new cmd window which disappears very quickly with no message in the initial cmd window.

Toucan 2 and Linux (2009)

Submitted by robinpc on November 24, 2009 - 3:24pm

Hi ...

I noticed some older posts stating there might be a 2.x version of Toucan that ran native on Linux, but now that we're on 2.1 I've searched and can't find it for the life of me. Was it dropped, or can someone post a URL?

If dropped, anybody got a decent ccrypt shell script, or should I just do the obvious and hack one together?

Best,

R.

Thank You Toucan / 7Zip, and of course PortableApps...

A successful restore from backup today following the crash of a USB drive. Here is a description of the process. When I first started with Toucan just a few weeks ago, something of this sort would have been helpful...

Backup regimen:

- Five rotating backups.
- A new backup at the end of each day.
- Backup goes to a second local USB drive.
- Backup is scripted as a BAT file, and is based the script described in the Help file (which would not work in earlier Toucan versions; I would assume that problem has been fixed).
- Not yet using encryption.
- Am passing a password.
