PortableApps Menu Alternative ?

Submitted by protocol on June 25, 2007 - 11:38am

Hello all

I was sorry to see that there is still no update to the PortableApps Menu app. At this point i wish to ask if there is any other app with similar functionality that one might try.

Also, i can only wonder about the future of this project. Without any doubt, John's work is a life-saver. Yet, the fact that applications are not being updated in a predictable manner leads to fears.

Would John care to clarify on the project's status?

Critical problem with higher DPI!

Submitted by psymastr on June 22, 2007 - 6:00pm

There is a very big problem with the portable apps menu and a higher dpi then the default 96, on vista, I am using 120 dpi (because my screen resolution is 1680x1050 and the higher dpi screws up the text in the portable apps menu... The only way to exit it, is to click where the x "should" be if it wasn't screwed up.

Pictures attached.

Autoplay for PAM

Submitted by alanh on June 21, 2007 - 3:09pm

Is it possible to get Windows to autoplay the PAM menu without running through every file on the portable drive? At present my PAM menu won't 'autostart" until Windows has scanned the entire drive. For my current set-up I've used TweakUI to set Portable Apps as a handler and then made that the default for mixed content for my ThumbDrive.

Cheers

Feature suggestion (Close and Eject drive)

Submitted by Kpi on June 20, 2007 - 8:52am

How about a new button "Close PAM AND umount USB drive"?

PAM should have a flag about how many apps were launched (evidently, from PAM, if someone launch any app EXTERNALLY, it's user problem, we're talking about PAM, not magic). When a portable App is closed (need to monitor execution threads), flag value will be reduced , when an App is launched, it will be increased.

This new option should check periodically the system (how about a check every 5 secs?) when launched until our flag value is zero, and then should try to umount the drive (3 to 6 tries, not more).

Folder buttons on start menu don't work

Submitted by crshortt on June 19, 2007 - 9:49pm

I recently started using Portable Apps on a flash drive and absolutely love it. But I am unable to make the folder buttons for Documents, Music, Pictures, and Video work. When I click on them nothing happens. The only way I can access my folders directly from the start menu is by clicking on Explore. Everything else on the Start Menu works fine.

A possible PAM bug in Windows 2K-not the bug that prevents PAM from working

Ok this looks serious, about 10-15 mins after launching PAM on Windows 2K (Pro) Win2K reboots w/o prompt also it runs a chkdsk when rebooting.

It happened on 2 Windows 2K comps, it does not reboot when I don't launch PAM. And it happened multiple times!

Please note I am using the latest PAM beta.

This does not happen when I am on XP.

PortableAppMenu Should Only Run One Instance

Submitted by ticklemeozmo on June 19, 2007 - 11:17am

PortableAppsMenu should only have one running instance.

I leave the PortableAppsMenu.exe program running (in a hurry, it's just easy to shut the programs and pull rather than click the little icon and hit exit) between use, and when insert my USB key again, i find myself starting up PortableAppMenu again. This creates two instances.

I would like PortableAppMenu to open the current running instance's menu should it be run twice accidentally.

PAM and keeping it on the desktop.

Submitted by jfreetage on June 17, 2007 - 8:15pm

After searching the forums for an hour, I found only one post about keeping the PAM open on the desktop and not having it go away like the windows start menu, but the replies were in the area of it's impossible.

SO I give you the situation that I am faced with, and maybe someone who is much more smarter on computers than I am can figure it out.
