Pidgin: Not really portable

Submitted by doctor_nemesis on October 16, 2006 - 11:18am

I've look through these forums, and spotted lots of people with the same problem, who seem to recieve the same response.

Problem: Gaim cannot connect.
Cause: GTK 2.8.x is on the host system. This is incompatable with Gaim.
Solution: Remove GTK 2.8.x and replace with 2.6.x.

This is not a feasible solution for an application which is meant to be completely independent of the host machine! When using a PC which is not your own, you cannot "simply" remove the existing GTK installation.

I thought that part of the point of having the GTK installation within Gaim was so that it could be used regardless of what GTK was on the existing system, not just if there wasn't _any_ GTK present.

Pidgin: Delete contact list

Submitted by PSJW12 on October 10, 2006 - 6:40am

I've found out that Gaim Portable stores your contact list in one of the local directories and I think it's risky because if someone steals your portable storage device you don't want them to know your contact list.

Could you update Gaim Portable with the option of not to store your contact list?

Pidgin: Disable Gaim Buddy Icons

Submitted by ares139 on September 30, 2006 - 11:39am

Is there a way to prevent Gaim from automatically downloading buddy icons upon startup? Gaim is very slow to load from my jumpdrive, and upon looking at the debug window, I can tell it is loading buddy icons. I have about 600 people on my list, with usually around 200 online at any given time. My jumpdrive is very slow to access small files (as most flash drives do, I hear). Anyway I know I can make it not *show* the icon, but that doesn't stop it from downloading them. Is there any way to prevent Gaim from loading them in the first place?

Thanks,
-Ares

Pidgin: PhoneGaim Portable? SIP/VOiP

Submitted by twnty3svn on September 29, 2006 - 11:51pm

Has anyone had any experience with PhoneGaim (www.phonegaim.com)? It is the SIP VOIP version of Gaim and does seem very promising. Just installed it and seems very stimilar structure to Gaim, it use the GTK common files, and only a total of 4 reg entries. Would it be possible to make it protable?

Also i've cheked out a few other SIP/VOiP software see below, what do others think?

Pidgin: Gaim opens in wrong window

Submitted by Serenity1981 on September 25, 2006 - 12:47pm

I got the new beta version of Gaim did a fresh install of it on my USB drive and when I double click a buddy to send them a message the default location of that message window is off my screen, even after resizing it and everything it still opens all message windows off my screen. Any help would be great.
Thanx

Also I have 3 monitors and I don't have any issue with any other progams or even the older version of GAIM.

Pidgin: Ctrl+Enter to send message on 2.0?

Submitted by Jakanden on September 23, 2006 - 7:00am

Hello all,

I am trying to use Gaim 2.0 and I noticed they disabled the ability to check "Ctrl + Enter sends message".

I read on the Gaim FAQ (http://gaim.sourceforge.net/faq2.php#q20) about editing your gtkrc file but I have tried editing everyone of them I can find and I cannot get this option turned on.

Any help would be appreciated!
