All of a sudden I get the following error when launching Pidgin. I have made no changes to teh software. Should I uninstall it and reinstall?

Received unexpected response from http://api.oscar.aol.com/aim/startOSCARSession: useTLS=1 is not allowed for non secure requests.

So a McAfee virus signature update I just received has caused McAfee to automaitcally delete the file PidginPortable.exe if I try and start Pidgin. It deletes it even if I just browser the directory.

This McAffee page ( http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_260131.htm ) shows the virus it is supposedly finding.

This seems like a false positive to me.

I have no way to stop McAfee as this is on a work laptop and we are locked out from making exceptions in McAfee.

Anyone have any ideas?

I tried searching around, checked the "Source", and copying the INI files everywhere where it makes sense. Sadly, no use at all.

As far as I know I have a "DisableSplashScreen=true" option in the *.ini file. If the Data/settings/*.INI fails, I should just copy it to the .exe launcher. Rite'?

What else could I do? App just comes up instantly, and I have to click all the splash screens. REALLY annoying.

Does anyone know if there is a way to have pidgin open hyperlinks (and anything else that opens a browser) in a portable browser? It is just a minor annoyance but it seems odd that it opens up the browser specified on the computer currently in use.

I saw a browser tab in pidgin preferences mentioned a few times on a Google search but I could not find this anywhere in the software itself...

I have installed this plug-in [ http://sourceforge.net/projects/sipe/ ] for Pidgin and it does not appear to work. I have a friend who uses it with standard Pidgin and it works great. However when I install it I do not get the option to add an OCS account. I assume the installation puts the dll somewhere that Pidgin Portable can't find it, what do I need to do?

I'm trying to use pidgin portable but it looks like pidgin.dll is getting slapped down.

I get the error message:
Error loading pidgin.dll
Access is denied

And then a McAffe On-Access error message:

User defined detection: Deleted

Is there any way to rename pidgin.dll or somehow get around this?

I've just installed this product for the first time (v2.6.5 ). Although in Preferences I have "highlight misspelled words" ticked it has no effect. How do I get the spell check to work?

I installed the last version of Pidgin Portable and all look fine. I started the app and started to add my accounts, later, I quit from Pidgin, and then I opened it again, and Pidgin ask me again add each account... why?? I redownload and reinstall, clean cache, but the problem still is there, every time I open Pidgin, every time that I need to add my accounts.

What can I do?

I hear there is a command line version of Pidgin (or what became Pidgin - Gaim). If that's still available as an active tool, it should be bundled with Portable Pidgin so that we can also use the terminal non-GUI version portably, and/or have both options via the Portable Pidgin package (GUI or non-GUI).

Forgive me if this is an FAQ but I've searched Pidgin's own site and can find no reference to it.

How does one type accented characters in a Pidgin IM window?

If I'm using most other programmes (including Thunderbird and Windows Live Messenger) I get é by using CTRL+ALT+e, í with CTRL+ALT+i and so on (as I'm doing now). I can also get the Euro symbol € by typing CTRL+ALT+4.

These key combinations don't work in Pidgin.

In Ireland we use € and in Irish one uses áéíóú (accent is called a fada but is the same as the French acute).
