No menus in Windows Me

Submitted by sawjew on January 28, 2006 - 7:32am

I have been using Portable Openoffice for a couple of weeks now and I find it (and Portable Firefox) excellent. We are not allowed to install software on our PCs at work and this enables me to walk right past that restriction and maintain all my own settings and bookmarks! I have used Portable Openoffice successfully on XP Pro, XP Home and NT4, but when I tried to use it on Windows Me I found the menus to be completely missing. I have tried it on two different computers running Me with the same result. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be and how to fix it?

Not able to save docs in OpenOffice

Submitted by neoluk on January 25, 2006 - 4:12am

Hi all, I've installed portableSuite (full version), on my pen drive. Everything is working correctly but I cannot save any doc created with Openoffice, whether a text or a spreadsheet or a presentation. The "save" button is not working at all as well as the "Save" and "Save as" command in the "File" menu. I can only discard the documents and close the program. In the meanwhile AbiWord is working properly. Any suggestion?

Thanks Luca

Disadvantages

I am an OOo user. I read the article about Portable OOo from Cnet, and now I understand its advantages.

But I don't understand the difference between full version of OOo. Though Portable OOo requires half as large storage/disk space as full version, why OOo developpers still publish full version? Does Portable OOo has any limitation or problems?

And can I use portable OOo on a memory card? I use a SD card since it has large capacity and great compatibility with laptop PCs.

Timing of Portable OO.o splash screen

I was hoping to get some opinions of the Portable OpenOffice.org splash screen. What it's supposed to do is be briefly visible and then fade into the OO.o splash screen. It's there because on a slower drive, the OO.o splash takes a bit to come up. With the Portable OO.o 2.0.1 release, though, I think I left the timing a bit long as on a good USB thumbdrive, you may not see the standard OO.o splash (which I don't want to have happen). If I set it a bit shorter, there may be a pause between the two, though.

So, my question is, how does the current Portable OO.o feel to you? Do you see the standard OO.o splash after it? What kind of drive are you running on?

Operation from CD

Submitted by OIdRabbit on January 11, 2006 - 4:38am

Is it possible to run a portable app - specifically OOo - from a CD and use RAM or a temporary directory for transient data (which, of course, will be lost on closing the app)?

I am thinking in terms of a demonstration disk...

Changing the files off OOo to get a localization.

Lads,

First I would like to thank John for this fabulous option to have your favorite apps with you on a usb stick.

My "problems" sofar has been that I would like to change the installation off OOo into the Dutch localization. I thought I could just copy and paste the files from an ordinary OOo 2.x off my windows partition to the exact location (programs folder) on my flash disk. Is this correct and/ or wich folders should be spared? Thanks alot for the answer. Got my GF already to use her flash drive with Firefox and Gaim at the local universaty....

Cheers.

you forgot a extem tiny thing (yust 2 folders, 0 file)

Hi

I like the "portable-Idea", atm i am making a gift for my girlfriend, usb-stick(1GB) with all she needs for the office. I played around with:
-Firefox 1.5
-Thunderbird 1.5
-Openoffice

T think there shoud be a directory called "en-US" in the folder "samples" in the folder "share":

PortableOpenOffice\openoffice\share\samples\en-US

i got an error on by clicking on the "sample" buton in "calc" under the "New/Templates and Documents"-menu.

BTW, you wrote about the localisation... it will be done later, cant it be done, by yust copy& paste it from a naitive installation ?

btw, the Viewer "Irfanview" can be started without installation ;-), maybe 1 Application more for http://portableapps.com

Moving my settings from OOO to PortableOOO

Submitted by Zane on January 6, 2006 - 7:21am

Hi all.

First of all I wish to say a big THANK YOU to John for it's extragood work: I really appreciate FF, TB and OOO portable!

Just a qeustion about PortableOOO: I have customized my "installed" versione of OpenOffice.org and I'd like to move all my setting to the portable edition, since I'll keep only the portable.

How to? I tried to move "C:\Program Files\OpenOffice\presets\" to "OpenOffice (portable)\settings\user\" but this isn't working as expected.

Thank you very much!

OOo Quickstarter

Submitted by tappet on January 4, 2006 - 8:42pm

First, thank you for a wonderful site, and even better set of applications!

I'm having an issue with PortableOOo 2.0.1 on Windows XP. When I start up the program using the launcher, the OOo Quickstarter also launches. This would not be an issue, except that even after I close the Quickstarter, Windows won't let me un-mount my USB Drive. I get the error message "The device (Generic Volume) cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later."

I checked the Task Manager, and there didn't seem to be any unusual processes running. Any advice?
