Layperson directions for sync'ing TB with Toucan

Submitted by tisha_oz on May 25, 2008 - 3:34pm

Hi everyone,
I am new to Portable Apps and extremely excited about using Thunderbird portable. I have searched google and this website to find the best way to sync it with my main TB, and decided to try to use Toucan, but even after reading the Support page I am still very confused as to how to do this. Can anyone please post some detailed, step by step directions on how to sync the birds with Toucan? I am not an advanced user and so lay directions would be awesome...
Thanks a lot!

Initial Impressions, questions, and thoughts

Hi - I am a relative newcomer to the world of portable apps and Toucan so please bear with me. I mostly work in the Linux world but must from time to time also use Windows. So I am looking for tools such as Toucan to help keep things consistent for me as I move about from one computer to another. To accomplish this I bought a 4gb USB memory stick and loaded it with many of the portable apps/suite which seems like a fine idea/concept at first but actual usage is beginning to raise a few questions....

Sync Equalise - Should check "file content" not just timestamp (FAT-NTFS Timestamp Errors)

Submitted by itsthemetho on May 18, 2008 - 1:36am

Hi Guys,
Great product! The only thing missing for proper syncing is the option to check content within a file between different directories.

Without this option, the program will copy files back and forth directories, if run multiple times. This is especially true when using FAT16 and NTFS. This file time stamp attributes are slightly different.

George.

No "go" button?

Submitted by hummer on May 11, 2008 - 12:44pm

Hi,

I have downloaded and installed Toucan more than several times and just can't figure this out. The only tab that has a Go button is the Secure tab. On all the other tabs, the Go is missing. Thinking I had to do something for the Go to appear, I filled out the Sync tab, but still no Go. What am I missing? Thank you.

Subfolders in 1.2.2

Submitted by johnny-yaya on May 9, 2008 - 7:24pm

Hi,

Ver 1.2.2, Sync tab.

In the Folders and Extensions to exclude area, it appears as though Toucan's not targeting *specific* folders, but is simply comparing all folder names to those particular strings & discarding anything that matches.

My example is if I want to leave out my \TrackMania\Skins\Avatars folder, I can't simply enter that string. I have to just enter Avatars & hope that's the only folder named Avatars. If I do have multiple folders named Avatars, they're all excluded. If I put in the entire path, it appears that line is ignored.

Portable Variables - WinXP versus WinVista

Submitted by netgk5815 on May 9, 2008 - 1:45pm

I am assuming the @docs@ portable variable would be equivalent, on WinXP to:
@USERPROFILE@"\My Documents"

Is Toucan "Vista aware" enough to know the absolute path on Vista is:
C:\Users\%USERNAME%\Documents
rather than:
C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\My Documents

Just a thought.

Need advice on multiple computer syncing

Submitted by tpund on May 8, 2008 - 4:55am

I have 3 computers that I use regularly (for the files I want to sync anyway). What I've done so far is to place the folders and files I wanted synced into a folder on each of the computers. What I'm wondering is what would be the best setting to sync these folders to keep them up-to-date on all the computers.

Example: Do some work on computer A then sync to computers B and C to keep them up to date. Then work on computer C and sync to A and B to keep them up to date.

Dumb question?

Submitted by phamiltonsmith on April 30, 2008 - 10:04am

I have a doubt when using Mirror (update).

The situation:
-I have syncd a folder on my PC with its image on my USB key. They are now identical
-I now delete a couple of files from the directory on my USB

Questions:
-when I perform the next sync, will it now delete the files form the PC or will it copy the files back to the USB.
-when i delete files, how does toucan know that the files have been deleted and not that the same files on the PC are brand new?

TIA
Paul
