Delete First Option for Mirror Update?

Submitted by mazzthepianoman on April 30, 2008 - 9:31am

We backup 5 files worth accounting files totaling about 900MB on a 1GB flash drive daily. Each day the oldest file is removed from the source and a new file is made. This creates a problem with a mirror update since the update occurs before the deletion of of the oldest file on the destination drive. This causes the update of the newest file not to occur but the deletion afterwards goes through. I believe there should be an option with a mirror update that the deletions are carried out first.

Mirror (Update)

Hi guys,

Just discovered Toucan and it looks like a good substitute for WinSCP's Sync functionality. What I do now is copy my document folders off to my Linux box via SFTP/SCP on my LAN which is a bit slow & sluggish but skips all the files which don't need updating.

Now since there's lots of files I'd like to minimise the traffic between the source (windows) and destination (linux), it's always one way copy unless I'm restoring files (so destination won't have files of newer timestamps). Mirror (Update) looked like something which might be ideal for this task.

Manual?

I am interested in using Toucan, but can't find the manual. I am trying to find some documentation that explains the differences between the sync modes:

- Copy
- Update
- Mirror (Copy)
- Mirror (Update)
- Equalise

I know I could set up some test folders and files to experiment, but if this was documented somewhere that would be helpful!

Should tmp file really be created in Toucan's folder?

Toucan (1.2.2.0) is consistently creating a tmp file inside it's own folder. This happens when I create a 7z archive from the backup tab. I haven't tested this with zip, but I assume it's just as susceptible.

I believe the tmp file should be created on the backup's target. First, the target is more likely to have more capacity than the backup's source. Second, it would help eliminate the undesirable scenario where Toucan happens to resides on the same backup source from which the tmp file is being written to. Thirdly, it just feels right. Smile

Synchronisation mode 'equalise' error.

I've installed Toucan version 1.2.1. I've tried to synchronise two folders using the 'equalise' mode. Each folder is located on a different harddisk. I've done some testing using simple text files. First I created two files in the source folder [A]. Synchronisation was ok. Then I changed the contents of the files in the destination folder [B]. Synchronisation did not update the files in the source folder [A]. The last modified date and time tags of the files in the destination folder returned to the values corresponding to the time the files were first created.

Encrypt / Decrypt PA

This thought just came up while I was trying out Alpha 2.

Would it be possible to add a button that would Encypt or Decrypt the Portable APPS or better the entire USB. This would solve a problem that some people are having by not being able to do so now.

The idea would be to encrypt the entire USB with the exception of TUCAN and the Portable Apps Menue. Then a person could open PAM as usual. Then only see Tucan in the menue until TUCAN is used to decrypt the USB and PAM restarted.

The only thing unencrypted would be the decryption program, TUCAN, and PAM.

Hope this made sense.

A couple of questions

Submitted by Devo on April 17, 2008 - 11:59am

I have a couple of questions about the way Toucan is set up. First, why is there no ToucanPortable.ini like every other program on this site? Is there any way to disable the splashscreen? Second, how come in the root folder the executable is called Toucan.exe rather than ToucanPortable.exe like everything else? I just asked these questions because it's just a bit different than the other programs on this site and I was curious.
