GIMP: Mysterious Conflict

Submitted by Jerry Fletcher on November 21, 2010 - 9:31pm

Hello, I'm having some issues running Gimp Portable.

Whenever I try to run the program, it gets to

Querying new Plug-ins

& begins sending me numerous errors.

Specifically:

*.exe has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

Whereas the *.exe would be (I assume) every single file in this directory:
C:\~\GIMPPortable\App\gimp\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins

GIMP Portable Add-ons

Submitted by sag47 on October 22, 2010 - 9:02pm

I created a small project for adding on to Gimp Portable. I use Gimp as a professional and these add-ons are a must for me. I decided to create a small archive which would be easy to install into Gimp Portable.

Let me know if anyone has any questions. I may make a portable app out of it but I'd have to create my own custom installer because the PA.c Installer won't pack it since it's not a complete App... Just an add-on for an app.

Install the GIMP Help on 2.6?

Submitted by Moonbase on October 10, 2010 - 10:16am

Since such simple things as

apt-get install gimp-help

don’t work on Windows, does anyone have some insight for me if (and how) it is possible to install the latest GIMP Help into the portable version 2.6.11?

I’d prefer using both English and German versions, switched by PA’s language setting (like GIMP’s GUI language itself), if anyhow possible.

Any suggestions?

GIMP: Save as anything but XCF crashes the plugin

Submitted by tuxcomputers on October 9, 2010 - 2:11am

I just installed the latest GIMP portable (2.6.11) and every time I try and save the image as anything except the XCF type of file I get this:

GIMP Message
Plug-in crashed: "file-jpeg.exe"
(E:\..blah blah blah\file-jpeg.exe)

The dying plug-in may may have messed up GIMPS internal state.
You may want to save your images and restart GIMP to be on the safe side.

GIMP Message
Saving 'image name' failed:

Procedure 'file-jpeg-save' returned no values.

[Fixed] GIMP Portable 2.6.11 does not open other file types then XCF

Submitted by intermayer on October 9, 2010 - 2:03am

Hey guys,
Installed GIMP Portable 2.6.11 over an existing 2.6.10. Tried to open a JPG file from XnView in GIMP, error message: Unknown filetype.
Trying to open the file from within GIMP: GIMP does only see XCF files, click on "all image files" - same behaviour, only XCFs are displayed. Click on "all file types" shows JPGs to, but opening the file leads to the same results - unkown image type.
Same problem with a clean install of GIMP Portable 2.6.11.
Now I switched back to the backup of GIMP Portable 2.6.10, works well.
Any ideas?

Cannot run GimpPortable in Windows 7

Submitted by jcpma on September 27, 2010 - 8:26pm

Hi,

I used GimpPortable in my windowsXP computer and it was good. I have now another computer (a new one), with Windows7 but GimpPortable will not run. It loads halfway, and then it crashes. I have tried an older version as well as the current version (2.6.10 rev2), with similar disappointing results. It seems like another fellow had the same problem with Gimp and Gimp Portable:
A google search showed this (dead) link, but I was able to see the Google cached link on its forum:

[Fixed] Gimp Portable 2.6.10

Submitted by willgoss on July 9, 2010 - 2:30pm

Well, I downloaded and installed.....but

In the About it tells me it is 2.6.9 It also does not have the new Theme look that eliminated the Disappearing Menu Line in Windows 7 .....

The Gimp 2.6.10 had problems until they changed to a setup-1 new windows installer...

It appears you also need to fix the installer.....

I need admin account to install gimp?[EDIT:FALSE ALARM]

Submitted by bh2ooo on July 7, 2010 - 11:32pm

Why would it not install using the usual Limited account in XP? Seems the others (all?) install without Admin privileges.

[[EDIT: just updated to new GIMPPortable_2.6.10.paf.exe in Limited account without problem. So I retried install of GIMPPortable_2.6.9.paf.exe; this time no problem either. I guess something on my end was at fault (AV or whatever) that gets frequent updates. PLEASE IGNORE THIS POST. MODS: MAYBE DELETE IT]]

I "always" use a Limited account except for MS update and installing "real" applications that write to the registry.
