VLCPortable vs OFFICIAL VLC portable - functionaly different ?

Submitted by live on January 9, 2014 - 3:34am

I downloaded VLCPortable 2.1.2 from https://portableapps.com/apps/music_video/vlc_portable

I also downloaded VLC 2.1.2 32 bits and 64 bits (7zip no installer version) from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html

If I compare the versions from either portableapps to vlc ones, I have these information:
VLCPortable: 651 files, 250 folders; 72.3 Mb
VLC2.1.2-win64: 663 files, 242 folders, 97.9 Mb
VLC2.1.2-win32: 708 files, 245 folders, 98.7 Mb

So the portable version of VLC are about 30Mb fatter,
1/ how comes?
2/ Are they functionaly different?

VLC: Apple .MOV files only play audio - no video

Submitted by tacq on July 3, 2013 - 8:25am

Hi all,

new to portable apps. I downloaded portable vlc to play a series of MOV files in my possession.

When I play these files I only have audio, no video. I have tried playing with the settings in tool/preferences, with no joy. I thought it may have been the files, so I downloaded the quicktime alternative codec. I can play these files successfully on my pc since downloading quicktime alternative through IE browser.

I'm running Windows 7 SP1 - 64bit.

Any help to get these files to work will be appreciated.

VLC closes immediately after launch / doesn't launch - Windows 8

Submitted by btmitchell on March 29, 2013 - 5:41pm

Hello,

My VLC Portable (latest, 2.0.5) has strangely just stopped working. I upgraded it awhile ago (whenever it was released) and it was working fine.

When I try launching it (tried with a video file 'open with', launching the executable directly and via portable apps platform) it just does nothing.

Sometimes I see the splash image for a brief second, then nothing. No error message - and the process is not listed in task manager.

VLC and font cache

Submitted by anonymous_person on March 4, 2013 - 11:40pm

Would it be possible to "portablize" the %APPDATA%\vlc folder? One of its uses is to store a font cache, however, because it is deleted upon exit, VLC Portable always has to recreate the font cache when its started. This is rather inconvenient.

VLC2.0.5 problems on windows installations

Submitted by i2hhj on January 13, 2013 - 11:28am

I have been editing a presentation of text, images and videos on a CD which should run under present and future windows versions starting from Windows 98. The programm "CDMenuePro" from http://www.cdmenupro.de/ has been used (30 days free trial version available) for this work. This has an imbedded video player which looks rather old and not accepts new compression codecs like MPG4.
Thus I installed VLC Portable 2.0.5 on this CD.
However there are problems when running a video from this CD.
under Windows 98 : not accepted by VLC Portable
