Remove Firefox in favor of Firefox Portable?

Submitted by cyberguest on June 7, 2008 - 9:36pm

I'm a long time Firefox user and I'm thinking of uninstalling Firefox and replacing it with Firefox Portable. The main draw of Firefox Portable is that it requires no installation which is a big plus for me since I've had some issues with Firefox's modification of my registry settings in the past. So, should I go ahead and remove Firefox in favor of Firefox Portable? Or is there some features that Firefox have that the portable version don't? Thanks.

FF3 RC2 Crashing several times a day

Submitted by EwanG on June 7, 2008 - 8:44pm

It seems like RC2 has just been one fun discovery after another for me...

In any event, the last few days it has been crashing several times a day - usually when I am selecting a filter or other javascript on a page, but occasionally just when I am on one page and go to my bookmarks to move to another page. Just me being lucky?

My addons (in case that's the problem) are AdBlockPlus, StumbleUpon and FoxyProxy. All of which were updated and supposedly are FF3 compatible.

Appreciate any help. I am submitting the crash reports, but figured I'd check here just in case.

Firefox 3 Memory

This comment was just posted on my blog, and is identical to my own experience using both Firefox 3 and Portable 3

"I had the beta version and it eliminated the memory issues on all versions but then it did its upgrade to the current version and the memory problem came back. I had to delete version 2 and reinstall fresh. Not sure why, but now my version 3 still has the memory issue even after reinstalling it."

Moving settings, what's the best way?

Submitted by young.lukas on June 5, 2008 - 11:27pm

So a long time ago I had FF2 installed on my computer, and then I saw the portable test version of FF3, back in beta 2. I thought it looked cool, wanted to try it out, but didn't want to destroy my FF2 just in case, so I installed the portable version, started completely fresh (didn't bring over the bookmarks or anything; they tend to clutter), and never looked back.

Changed program settings are not saved

Submitted by ricardo.silva on June 5, 2008 - 8:54pm

Hi,

I'm not being able to customize the program settings of Firefox Portable (2.0.0.14).

Even changing the default startup homepage (I normally disable that and choose "Show a blank page"), is not being saved.

Anything I change is lost when I close the program, is this the expected behavior?

Ricardo

Problems with Firefox 3 portable (update related?)

Submitted by oldredhat on June 5, 2008 - 8:20pm

I'm hoping that someone here can help me. I've been using Firefox 3 Portable at work. Recently the automatic update triggered, and firefox tried to update. The update failed, and firefox crashed. When I tried to reopen firefox, I get the splash screen, and then the crash message pops up. It does this everytime.
