We're in need of a volunteer to help track development test releases on a daily basis. Basically, you'll be responsible for monitoring the beta forum and then updating the Development Test page within the development section to ensure all listed apps are up to date. The ideal candidate has:
- HTML skills as you'll be required to manually update the tables in the above page
- been a member for at least a few months and has been active in the forums
- not already handling a couple other things here at the site
- has the time to skim the beta forums each day and make the edits
- is a motivated self starter with excellent people skills
Any interested parties, please post here.
I'd volunteer if i'd had more time![Sad](https://portableapps.com/sites/all/modules/smiley/packs/kolobok/sad.gif)
Optimism is a moral duty - Karl R. Popper
I could do it. I can check back a couple times a day while at work, then in the evening as well, and on most weekends too.
I don't have a ton of experience with HTML, but w3schools and my internship are changing that.
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
It's relatively simple HTML. You'd be looking at updating a table like this:
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Yeah, I understood how to do it, just haven't done much yet. If you like, I can work on that page for you. I'd like to wait for Simeon to get his updated list, or I can work on one tonight and get everything up and running.
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
I've set you as the owner of the page with dev rights, so you should be able to edit it. Give it a try and starting adding a few from Simeon's list and Ryan's list below. Best to ensure that the app is in PAF and a Development Test with the help files, etc.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I for one think Zach is a great choice for this
Thanks for stepping up!

Thanks John, it'll take some time because i'll have to download some of the apps to double check their status (PAF and Dev Test). Should we create a third table for outdated beta tests?
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
Over the last months, we had multiple posts about the fact that the Development Test Releases and Pre-Releases "sink in" the forums and drift off into oblivion.
So after reading through the debate Patrivk and John were having today, I decided to make a list. Its basically a compilation of the existing lists and the ones that arent in any of these. Some may already be outdated, I didn't check any of these.

The goal is to increase their page rank for those keywords with incoming links from high ranked sites. Can you check out the page and make sure that my setup is fine so far? Would you like apps sorted in any particular way, or should I just add to the bottoms of each table?
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
It looks good. Ideally, alphabetical or reverse chronological would work. It's annoying to reorder because of the zebra striping, though.
And good call on the older beta table, I like it.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Should I make a post on which developers will let us use their full proper name, or just ask in individual threads, cause I think it will look better with proper names.
Also, I don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but what about a page where developers can post a comment to with there update. It'd be a lot easier to track DT updates especially.
You can make a new post in the forums asking who is ok and who isn't. Also, if anyone wants to update their screen name to their real name, too.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Anyone that wants to update it to there real name? Not just devs? I just wanted to clarify. Also, did you catch the second part of my comment, I added it in after.
Developers will be able to ping the Dev Test page when they do an update with a comment. Once the page is updated, the comment can be removed. I just set it up to work with comments. Just nobody use it yet.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Thanks. Glad you like it. Getting things in order from this huge list is gonna take FOREVER, i'll keep plugging away though, after this mass update is taken care of, things should be much easier.
As for arranging, I'll try to keep things alphabetical, that seems to be how they are arranged now (except for a few I just added)
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
Ditch zebra until you're done. Just set them all to odd (or even) which ever is white. Then when done, you can just stripe it quickly.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
good idea...that should make things a bit easier for now at least
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
I could write a PHP script to read this all from a database...
"If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate."
Yes, that would be a great idea.
Maybe John only wants perl on the site ... so it could be done that way too.
If John doesn't want it to be database driven, we could at least make a little db and app that would give Zach the HTML tables to paste into the development tracker.
MC
Drupal is written in PHP, there's no Perl![Blum](https://portableapps.com/sites/all/modules/smiley/packs/kolobok/blum3.gif)
"If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate."
I'd really appreciate that. I can maintain that database if i have access to it. I think that would be MUCH easier than adding, reorganizing, changing background color for table rows, and worrying about sort order.
If done through a database, it could be set to automatically sort, and possibly just detect the number of total rows, then apply the color to every other row. I've been researching a little bit, and it doesn't look that hard to set up.
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
I've been working to update the page. I haven't added a whole lot yet because I am awaiting feedback from John about the database idea.
I have not finished going through the list of apps that was posted above, but if you are the developer of an app, and have it ready to be in Development Test status, please add a comment here. Your comment will be deleted after I see it and update the page.
Also, if you are willing to support it ongoing, or wish for somebody else to take over, indicate that as well, so we can try to keep our apps updated even if a developer can no longer work on it.
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
Unless we have something that integrates with Drupal, we won't be doing a database just yet.
I added a Javascript that will auto-stripe all 3 tables on the page. It'll make things a lot easier for now.
Just be sure you're not editing it in something that's adding HTML, BODY, HEAD elements, etc as they were in there the last time I altered the page.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
He's using KompoZer as it's obviously a lot easier, but I let him know, and he had caught that he copied them all the same time.
Alright, i'll be sure to remove those when i copy changes over. Great news on the javascript. Thanks for the update.

That'd be nice, I think it would work well split between the two of you once the initial list is done.
I think it would work nice splitting it sooner
this takes forever to do lol. I went thru the first 5 pages of the Beta Testing forums. So far i've skipped all "launcher only" setups, but i've tried to include everything else. I'm sure i still missed stuff though.
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
I was just wondering if Drupal handles it correctly when two people are editing at the same time.
prolly not...that just means us developers would actually have to communicate on something![Wink](https://portableapps.com/sites/all/modules/smiley/packs/kolobok/wink.gif)
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
Communication, sweet sweet *communication*.
hey zach great job on the page
my only concern about going through the beta testing forums is that you may add an app that no one wants to support, or that is discontinued.
why dont you add a section that is like "possible apps" or "waiting for author confirmation"?
but great job all in all
Please search before posting. ~Thanks
The stuff that hasn't been worked on in a while is in the Outdated section. I'd say that we should just put apps of unknown status in there so another dev can pick them up if they wish.
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
You did an outstanding job getting the jungle of posts organised in such a clean list.![Smile](https://portableapps.com/sites/all/modules/smiley/packs/kolobok/smile.gif)
Again: Great Job, lost of people will love that page
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
Nowhere near done lol, but thanks for the compliments. Patrick is actually going thru the html source for the page and adding stuff I missed lol. Then he's sending me back the file and i'll upload it.
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
Worked on it this morning/last night, I'm gettin' Rock Band today (my first video game, lol), so I'll be back later.
It looks like all of the "class" info has been removed from the tables. I saw that you had added javascript to do the striping, but by removing the "class" info, the table elements are no longer properly separated. The cells no longer have borders.
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
I know, it was a temporary necessity. The class info makes the striping not work.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Alright. Its not a big deal, but borders did make things a bit more readable. I should have another set of apps to add this evening.
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
I've been thinking about this for a while, and as the topic of a Development Test Updater came up (admittedly I am the one who brought it up) on another thread, I thought I'd ask: Can I take over this position? Please?
I realise that ZachHuddock took on this position back in 2008, but as far as I can tell he has not been particularly active recently, and nobody has been keeping the Development Test page up-to-date except for a few of the developers who update the information about their own DevTests and no others, and on occasion Gord Caswell makes some of the changes posted in the page's comments section. I would not necessarily be able to update the page every day, but I would be able to update it on at least a weekly basis, and while I won't be able to get the whole list up-to-date right away, I can certainly start working on the backlog of changes right away.
Please let me know your decision either way.
~3D1T0R
I'd be fine with it, myself. Would anyone else care to chime in? I think Gord wanted to be involved.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I'm good with it. I'm more concerned with checking that apps are ready for release & trying to help keep up with the never-ending official app updates.
I have no issue with Gord being involved, I only ask that I get to too; Gord does good work, but he's only one man and can't be everywhere at once. (much like yourself John ;))
Edit: Typographical Error.
~3D1T0R
I like the idea of someone especially undertaking this job. I know that every developer can do this because he has editing rights. But I for myself have only cleaned up this page two or three times the last years, simply because I forget that page when I visit this site.
And if everyone remembers to post his dev test updates, it is done very quickly (copy paste and double check).
I've added you to the (currently dormant) 'Release Team' group. This gives you permission to edit the Dev Test wiki page tracker but not the Dev badge and blog which are reserved for developers who have released apps. Thanks for helping out!
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I'm happy to join the team.
I was actually considering applying for the Release Team, but I figured I'd take a smaller step first.
Unfortunately however, being added to the 'Release Team' group doesn't seem to have added the necessary permissions to edit the Dev Test page, I can now see "View" and "Revisions" tabs at the top, but no "Edit" tab. (also if I guess at the 'edit' url I get "Access denied You are not authorized to access this page.")
~3D1T0R
I edited the permissions so they should be rebuilt now. You also can try logging out, clearing PA.c cookies, and logging back in to be sure. If that doesn't work, I won't be able to set it right now because the permissions are corrupted in Drupal and will need much more work. Also, are you looking at Test Releases and Development Releases Status? You should be able to edit both now but nothing else.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Unfortunately I still see only the View and Revisions tabs (and guessing the edit URLs I still see Access Denied), even in a fresh install of Iron Portable, so it's not a cookies issue.
Here's what I see (two screenshots spliced together) on those two pages.
I look forward to the time when the permissions can be fixed.
~3D1T0R
I think it was the input format permission. Try it again now.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I was typing up a comment re: adding Opera Portable to the Pre-Releases section, I refreshed the page and guess what I saw? … "Edit".
Thank you, I'll get started on updating it right away.
~3D1T0R
Hey John,
I haven't been around much in a while (sorry), but I'm trying to put more time back to PA.c again (yay!). So I was checking on the DevTest page, and making a few updates, and I noticed that when you preview your changes, the "trimmed version" at the top of the page can be just a little confusing, because it's the start of the page, and then the page starts again.
Now, I thought I had fixed that, and after looking at the history of revisions, I see that I did, by adding "<!--break-->" after the first paragraph. However, it doesn't seem to work any more, and it seems that it should, considering that every time I preview the page I see this at the top of the page:
With this in mind, I changed the format to "Full HTML" (for the preview only), and it obeyed the <!--break-->, making the trimmed preview show only the first paragraph.
As for a fix, we could switch the page's format to Full HTML, but I figure you changed that to HTML for Devs on purpose, so a better fix would be to add "<!--break-->" to the filter of what's allowed in HTML for Devs.
Thank you.
~3D1T0R
Glad to see you around again, 3D1T0R.
I wanted to use this quite a while ago in my blog but it didn't work. Maybe it could be added for blogs too?
Thanks. I'm glad I haven't been totally forgotten.![Wink](https://portableapps.com/sites/all/modules/smiley/packs/kolobok/wink.gif)
I can't test (as I don't have a blog
), but I'm pretty sure Blogs are set to use HTML for Devs, so adding "<!--break-->" to the filter of allowed HTML in HTML for Devs should make it available for Blogs as well.
~3D1T0R
It appears to be working - I see the trimmed version ending after the first paragraph of the body.
Isn't it supposed to break at when inserted?
Hmm, yes, I see what you mean.
The old comment thing isn't used by Drupal 7. There should be an "Edit Teaser" link by the title of the page in edit mode.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
It most definitely is supposed to be recognised by Drupal 7, as every time I preview the DevTest page it shows a little green box at the top that says (in part):
And if I change the "Text Format" at the bottom of the page to "Full HTML" then it does work as expected.
On other pages (e.g. Blogs) I can understand that editing the summary separately is acceptable, and even sometimes prefered, but the DevTest page has enough people editing it (even if some only do so rarely) that having the "Summary" box show above the "Body" box could lead to confusion and potentially issues.
Is there a reason <!--break--> can't be added to the "HTML for Devs" whitelist?
~3D1T0R
Just edit it once. There's no need to edit it every time.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I've edited it at the indicated point. It now appears to be breaking as desired.
The reason I would prefer to use <!--break--> is because it will automatically have that box open if there's anything in it.
I understand that I need not edit the summary, but I would think that it would be better to enable the <!--break--> functionality (by adding it to the list of allowed HTML in the "HTML for Devs" text format) than to have the summary box appear every time anyone edits the page. (which is what happens now, due to Gord's edit.)
~3D1T0R
I've confirmed that Drupal doesn't support adding the comment break syntax to allowed fields. I added it and it was ignored in the actual display of the page teaser/full when the manual teaser was blank. Use of it only works with unrestricted HTML. If you restrict tags as is done with the HTML for Devs format for security reasons, the comment break won't work. I'm unsure why Drupal still shows the tooltip at the top.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Perhaps it's part of the page template for that type of page?
Well that sucks.
![Sad](https://portableapps.com/sites/all/modules/smiley/packs/kolobok/sad.gif)
I'd call that a bug. If I have some time, I'll report it to the Drupal people.
Thanks for trying.
~3D1T0R
